Losing Your Sport

Losing Your Sport

When describing myself I would always include that I was an athlete, it was apart of my identity. Since about the age of six I played football so it was essentially all I knew. I played football all through high school and was fortunate enough to earn a scholarship in to play in college. At the end of my freshman year had done so poor academically that i was dismissed from my institution. For someone who identified them self with football it was difficult for me not being able to play the sport I loved any longer. For the next two years I moped around my next college with no sense of purpose or motivation, I felt that without my sport I had no purpose. I was not involved any campus groups or activities and still just barely getting by with my grades. Through the power of Christ and talking with friends I was able to find purpose in my life and use the skills and lessons sports taught me to get involved and succeed. I used my knowledge of football to gain an internship with my universities football team, I also workout skills and knowledge to start personally training some of the students on my campus. I now use the skills I learned from sports on my academics, at my job and in day to day life : hard-work, analyzing situations, teamwork perseverance. I am glad I went through getting kicked out of school and losing the sport I loved because it made me a better person. I now see the impact sports has on our society as a result I want to make it my lifelong goal use sports to enhance the lives of others. The first thing I would like to accomplish is creating a workout facility for disadvantaged youth to keep them off of the streets and on the right path.

Principal Licking Heights Middle School at Licking Heights Local School District

Robby! Awesome article. I went through the same rough patch when the NFL did not work out. I was in grad school and miserable, probably clinically depressed. I was student teaching when a middle school Principal saved my life. He MADE me coach the middle school football team. In an instant I was reborn! Coach Tooson was the result. All of the pain, hurt, and disappointment at my percieved failure drove me to not allow young people to disappoint themselves and take advantage of opportunity. Point is, football is something you did, it is not who you are! Be great young man!
