Losing a Battle? Listen Up!

Why?

To give you an important message today:

You MUST Build Your Empire

You are either building an empire or you are destroying one.

Whether you know it or not, with every decision that you make each and every day, you are either creating or destroying your empire.

You are either setting yourself up to win or you are holding yourself down. This applies to every decision from what you eat to the stupid fight you have with your partner.

With every distraction that you partake in, you’ll add TIME to your empire attainment.

An empire is the only thing that will ensure you and your loved ones can survive anything.

Your empire is your saving GRACE. Empires can withstand massive attacks, fight wars and still manage to flourish.

Grant and I spent the first four years of our marriage being normal and having a normal “great” time...we were not thinking about building empires.

We were content living in a beautiful home on the top of the Hollywood Hills with views overlooking downtown Los Angeles to Malibu. We had it made...or so we thought.

Grant’s business was booming and I was working on primetime episodic TV. Life was good until the 2008 crash happened. And yes, it was a CRASH at my house.

The crash occurred along with a sixty-million dollar lawsuit from our “friends” (who actually conned us from the beginning). Neither Grant nor I had ever been involved in a lawsuit before. We were both a bit naive to the world of the rich back then.

We didn’t realize that con artists seek you out and you are just a mark with a big fat target on your back to them.

These people convinced us they were our friends and even had us be in their wedding!

After Grant agreed to become partners with them, we found out they were a total scam and major liability to us. We had to release ourselves from that deal immediately. But the con had already been set at that point, and they thought they could get a good sixty million from us.

At the same time this was occurring and we were bleeding out hundreds of thousands in lawyer fees to defend ourselves against these cons, a belly-up bank wanted all their loan money back on our real estate portfolio.

From 2008 to 2012, four hundred and sixty- five banks collapsed as a result of the economic crash. Banks were desperately trying to stay afloat and they needed money.

So even though we had never been late on a payment to the bank, they declared since our net worth dropped (like everyone’s in the entire country) that we were in technical default and wanted all the money now. I mean, who had fifty million liquid then?

As a middle-class girl from the streets of New Orleans who had never been around large amounts of money or exposed to such viciousness like this before, I knew I had to wake the hell up. The days of being oblivious were over if we were going to survive going forward.

Grant’s business as he knew it was over, and I was a few months pregnant with our first child.

Try getting a job as an actress in LA while pregnant — yeah good luck with that!

There was an avalanche of stressful circumstances that no one plans for that hit us hard and fast.

We were being attacked from every angle as desperate people stooped to desperate measures to get anything and everything we had. They were worse than vultures. Tensions ran so high between us, the temptation for Grant and me to explode on one another was immense.

Then I realized something that would change our lives as a couple forever. I realized that Grant and I would have to use this catastrophe to fortify, unite together, and go FIGHT the biggest war of our relationship together — side by side.

Let’s face it, bad things happen to good people every day. Marriage is hard. Having kids is hard. Having no money is hard. Having money is hard. Winning is hard. Even playing the game of life is hard.

But the hardest and most unbearable of all, is losing. If Grant and I had split up during those times, the enemies would have won. They would have destroyed our lives and that was just not an option. I HATE losing!   

It took those darkest hours to get me to finally go ALL IN on myself and my marriage.

I knew if I was going to survive this, I had to get behind Grant 100%.

I didn’t care who thought what of me or what women’s group was going to “disown” me for supporting a man. I decided I was going to quit acting altogether and we were going to build an empire.

We would never depend on someone or one source of income for our financial freedom ever again.

It was difficult to visualize at the time but I knew if I got behind Grant with all of my power, resources and did whatever it took to back him, that we could rule our world.

I ran to tell Grant about my plans to expand us to wider depths than he ever imagined. I explained my “Empire” theory and how I would demand every ounce of fight he had in him and no matter what blood, sweat and tears he would shed, I would have his back every second of the way.

I sold him somehow on my vision and he bought in. Then I asked him what he needed from me. His only response was, “All spending stops.” I said, “ That’s it?! DONE!” I had the easy job.

For the next couple of years, we went into “sacrifice” mode.

We didn’t spend a dime unless it went to build the business.

We didn’t go out on the weekends or do much of anything except work side by side day in and day out. There was something incredibly romantic though, knowing you have a bond with someone so powerful, that you refuse to let anyone or anything break you.

To this day, we would fight to the death to defend and protect each other. Trust, honor and courage are what our foundation was built upon.

Building an empire is what saved us and it will save you. It will make everything else easier.
