"His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy. There's vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti. He's nervous, but on the surface, he looks calm and ready" Eminem
Rapper Eminem was describing someone getting ready to enter a rap battle, but the same thoughts apply to those who are about to deliver a speech or presentation. Perhaps that has been you when you are about to deliver a speech or presentation?
A question I get a great deal is how can I stop from being so nervous before a speech?
The fact is that you are unlikely to ever lose having butterflies when you are going to deliver a presentation. Those nerves give you the energy and passion to deliver a great speech.
What will change with mastery is that the butterflies will be better controlled by you. You will feel more in control because you have delivered speeches before.
11 years ago I was networking with folks in the training and development world. They all said in order to become a better speaker I had two options, practice public speaking. I could either stand in from a mirror and deliver a speech OR I could join a Toastmasters club.
I firmly believe that Toastmasters was the best decision I ever made and one that continues to reap benefits for me till this day. Toastmaster provides a learning environment where you can take chances, try things and observe others. It all adds up to a powerful experience and one that will keep you coming back.
My first speech at Toastmasters was a case of two perspectives. I thought in the moment of delivery that I had delivered a wonderful speech. I was proud of my efforts and thought I was well on my way to becoming a world class speaker.
Then I watched the video! (you can too if you would like) Click here to see my first speech at Toastmasters.

Imagine my horror when I saw a nervous Steve pacing front and back during the speech. I couldn't believe what I saw on the video. I also couldn't believe the amount of filler words, coming out of my mouth.
Practice Makes Perfect...well almost!
A few short months later I delivered this speech. I was feeling like I was making progress and getting better at public speaking.
