Five tiny words that crack my heart into shards every time I hear them:
"Oh, I don't read books."
I don't understand. I can't understand, even though I've tried.
How can you not read? How can you deny yourself a voyage into another world? How can you not want to lose yourself in a forest of giant word-ferns?
Words that whisper into your ear, that breathe vibrant colour and texture into your mind?
Words that teach, that shock, that delight?
That zingy lightning shiver of anticipation as you peel back the wrapping of a parcel containing a new book, because you know there's treasure inside.
The arid parchment scuff of a well-loved book as you turn the pages and soak up the life leaking out of it.
Mostly, though, the free ticket to anyone you want to be, anywhere in the universe, at any time.
It's not just about the books, although I love books.
It's the universes hiding within them, waiting to welcome you along.
