?? About the Project: Discover the genetic mysteries of cardiovascular diseases with cutting-edge AI and genomics research. This project aims to unravel the enigma of genetic variants located in non-coding regions of the genome, which play a significant role in common cardiovascular diseases. While these variants lack an obvious mechanism for influencing disease, Dr. James Eales and his team have already shown that many of them impact disease risk through gene expression regulation, alternative splicing, or DNA methylation.
This project expands the scope of their work to all human tissues relevant to cardiovascular disease. Using deep learning models, they will capture DNA-sequence features critical to gene expression and alternative splicing. Various deep-learning architectures will be implemented, and their predictive performance will be rigorously assessed across all relevant tissues. The team will employ data-augmentation techniques to optimize neural network weights, without the need for additional data generation. The project will culminate in the creation of a comprehensive encyclopedia of regulatory sequences specific to various tissues and diseases.
