Q: As a tennis connoisseur, professional coach, and former tournament director of pro tournaments, how excited are you about the upcoming Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo?
A: I am eagerly looking forward to it. The tournament's seventh edition is set to take place, marking the third time it will be held in this sports complex. MexTennis has been able to get a strong lineup of players, including Stefanos Tsitsipas, Cameron Norrie, Karen Kachanov, Tommy Paul, Alex de Minaur, and Rodrigo Pacheco. These players have been performing exceptionally well. A special mention to Mexican player Rodrigo Pacheco, who ranked number one in the world in juniors this year and also won the Roland Garros junior doubles, adds excitement for the local fans. Doubles players Santiago Gonzalez and Micky Reyes Varela have also been showcasing their skills, with Santiago Gonzalez winning his first Masters 1000 title in Miami this year. Micky has been performing well in 2023, winning three Challenger events as well as two ATP 250 semifinals. the tournament’s hashtag is #YouHavetoBeHere and I think it suits it very well!
Q: Tell us about the strategic change that has taken place in the yearly schedule of this tournament.
A: Absolutely. In 2024, the Los Cabos Tennis Open will be held in February. This shift from its usual place in August was made to strategically position the tournament before the Indian Wells tournament in March. Many players tend to participate in tournaments in the Middle East, such as Doha and Dubai, before heading to Indian Wells. By having Los Cabos and Acapulco in close proximity to Indian Wells, players can conveniently travel from Mexico without experiencing jet lag. The change aims to attract top players who prefer a smoother transition between tournaments and capitalize on the more favorable weather conditions in February. It is a decision that holds great potential and is expected to draw larger crowds due to the high tourist season in Los Cabos.
Q: How has the quality of players participating in the tournament evolved over the years?
A: The Los Cabos Tennis Open is a highly competitive ATP 250 tournament. The roster has seen a remarkable improvement each year. This edition is no exception, with five top 20 players confirming their participation. Notably, Stefanos Tsitsipas is ranked fifth in the world, Karen Khachanov reached the semifinals at Roland Garros and currently holds the 11th position, Cameron Norrie, the winner from two years ago, now stands at 13th, while Alex de Minaur and Tommy Paul are ranked 16th and 17th respectively. The tournament organizers have yet to announce the full player lineup, but the current five participants alone make it a formidable competition. Last year, the tournament welcomed the world's number one player, Medvedev, which speaks to the caliber of talent the event attracts.
Q: Who do you find the most interesting player to watch among the participants?
A: Stefanos Tsitsipas. He is an aggressive player that can do anything on the court and is capable of defeating anyone when at his best. His highlight achievements include reaching the final of the Australian Open 2023 before falling to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. He was performing at his best at the French Open 2022 when leading Djokovic to two sets to zero. His highest ATP ranking was number three(current: number five). Considering his skills and achievements, I believe Tsitsipas is the standout player to watch.
