Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Phoenix on Orkin's Top 50 Termite Cities

According to Orkin, Los Angeles has claimed the number one seat in this year’s Top 50 Termites Cities list (released in March 2022) followed by San Diego (11), San Francisco (15), and Phoenix (25). The list is based on treatment data from where Orkin performed the most first-time customer termite treatments. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

Although drywood termites typically swarm in the summer, they can cause damage during any season. Drywood termites make themselves at home in the exposed wood of buildings, furniture, and any other areas with wood. They are often referred to as “silent destroyers” for the simple fact that they can be present for years, eating away at structures, without being spotted. To prevent extensive structural damage, it is recommended that homeowners and facility managers get a professional to conduct inspections.

Signs of a termite infestation:

  • Wood that is supposed to be solid sounds hollow
  • Visible swarms (easily missed because they only occur one or twice a year)
  • Termite droppings and discarded wings

How to prevent a termite infestation:

  • Store scrap wood and other wood materials at least 20 feet away from structures
  • Seal cracks and crevices to prevent entry ways
  • Routinely inspect for termites
  • Use treated wood for new construction projects and renovations
