LORI SCHRAMEK | ENTREPRENEURIAL LIVE INTERVIEWS WITH CONNIE FUKSA (2021)

Lori Schramek is pretty much your ordinary person. She went to college, graduated, was going to be a big career woman, she got married and she had kids. She did work for about five years up in Cockeysville, had three children, her oldest was about 10 months old when she had taking the leap to leave the workforce and stay home full-time.

It was scary for her at that time because she had worked all her life to be a big successful career woman and just kind of had that drive in her but little kiddos really stole her heart away. Lori struggled with that and that she felt like she has thrown away great opportunities and the truth of the matter was, she was just putting it on the shelf.

Even though she was not working full-time or getting a full-time paycheck, she did start a career with Mary Kay where she was a Mary Kay consultant for several years and then once her third was born, it was it just wasn’t possible. At that point, she left the Mary Kay business and still used their products.

Lori put her energy into PTOs, the church, charities just in the community, trying to organize neighborhood things if there were neighbors that needed help with things and that’s where she put her focus on in addition to her kids as well, but that’s all more flexible to be able to do all that and then she found herself and her youngest was probably in about six or seven grade and she was bored sitting at home and now you can only exercise so much and you can only clean your house so much and so she went back to work and worked at a preschool because that’s what she knew how to do.

She knows how to deal with little kids and she missed her kids being little so she love that and in the meantime she left out a step in 2004 when her husband dragged her down to Alabama and they moved to Birmingham and lived there for about fourteen years and just recently moved back up in Maryland, where his husband works for the government. She knew nobody from Alabama, no family and she said threw herself into the PTO and churches and charities and community and such and got involved as being a preschool teacher and did that for six or seven year.

When her youngest was approaching high school graduation, she just felt like she didn’t know what was going on. She was scrolling Facebook and saw a post from a friend of hers who was actually her middle daughter’s softball coach years before and she is the mortgage consultant, she opened up her own mortgage brokerage and she was looking to grow her business and she had reached out to her at that point and said, “Hey, tell her more about this opportunity and what would be required of me?” and Lori decided to take the leap and jump into it, got her license and jumped in with two feet and went out and bought some suits.

It was not as easy as it looked. It was hard putting herself back out there and she felt like her biggest hurdle was a lack of credibility even though she had a college degree and she bought three houses at that point and she understood the mortgage industry, did well on the test and all of that but she felt like she had a lack of credibility in the business world.

She was the old lady who didn’t know how to work a computer and could barely do email and it was hard for Lori. The end of 2017, her husband says they we’re moving back to Maryland and she had just started getting things going and feeling comfortable and rocking and rolling and so that kind of took the wind out of my sail. It was really difficult emotionally

Then she stumbled upon Fairway in Maryland where they had just opened the office in Annapolis which is where she lives and three literally three miles up the road is the office. They hired her on the spot and she jumped in and and it’s been a phenomenal experience. Great company to work for and even though it’s a large corporation each branch is independently owned and operated so she responsible for generating her own business she does have resources but she has to pay for those resources as well.
