Lord ?hiva himself was able to consume Halāla from the power that obtained by chanting names of ?rī Vi?h?u (vi?h?u tan mantra’japa mahimnā eva) ! ?hrī Padma Purā?a 6.232.16 –18 says:

?rībhūmisahita? deva? taptakā?canaku??alam ? ekāgramanasā dhyātvā sarvadu?khahara? prabhum ? nāmarūpa? mahāma?tra? japtvā lak?myāsamanvitam ? tadvi?a? tu mahāghoramādya? sarvabhaya?karam ? nāmatrayaprabhāvācca vi??o? sarvagatasya vai ? vi?a? tadabhavajjīr?a? lokasa?hārakārakam ? ~ Lord ?iva said — “Having meditated (i.e. when I meditated) with a concentrated mind upon that lord along with Mā Lak?mī having earrings of gold purified by fire, remover of all miseries, and on my having muttered the great hymn of the name and form (?rī Vi??u) along with Mahālak?mī, all that poison, which was very fierce, which was the first one, which was fearful to all, which was (capable of) destroying all the worlds, was digested (by me) due to the three names of ?rī Vi??u, the omnipresent one.”

?rī Brahmā??a Purā?a also states the same (as quoted by Bhagwatpad Vijayīndra Tīrtha in his ?rī Nyāyamauktikamālā) —ta? d???vā ghorasa?kā?a? prādurbhūta? mahāvi?am ? dhyātvā nārāya?a? deva? h?daye garu?adhvajam ? The same is also been said in ?rī Vi??u Dharma Up-Purā?a : “Due to the chanting of the three names of that all-pervading ?rī Vi??u, that terrible poison, which could have destroyed the worlds, was digested. It is only due to Lord ?iva’s meditating on ?rī Vi??u, that he was able to digest the terrible poison, right in his neck.”

In ?rī Garu?a Purā?a, Lord ?iva says to Maa Uma: aprakā?amida? devi guhyādguhyatara? padam ? purāhamabdhimathane patagendravi?āvaham ? avadhya? garala? ghorama?bhujamam?ta? yathā ? ~ Lord ?iva said — “O Devi, this is not a well known fact! At the time of Samudra-mathana, before consuming poison, I meditated on the ?rī Vi??u (It is due to his mercy that) I was able to drink it as easily as I had the nectar (ghorama?bhujamam?ta?).” In-fact, ?ruti (ke?isūkte - ?g Veda 10.136.7) says ‘Vāyu’ is the one who consumed the Halāla through Lord ?iva: vāyurasmā upāmanthat pina??i smā kunannamā ? ke?īvi?asya pātre?a yad rudre?āpibat saha ? ‘Vāyu’— is another name of ?rī Vi??u which occurs in ?rī Vi??usahasranāma (414) and also it refers to ?rī Vāyu Devaru !

Shiva is the source of auspiciousness the foremost of all auspiciousness the saboteur of evil and ignorance. Yet, that Turiam is the fountainhead of all that is good and all that is gross….He Himself becomes Vishnu, with Uma is verily the patronymic and source of all. The Halahala is Symbolic of the poison inhering in creation. The injurer of The spirit. Can only be neutralized with the Highest Auspiciousness.

Shruti says: “Vayu churned out for Him “…..The vayu is the “Prana” and it is Symbolic of Yoga and existence…..Lord Vishnu is However an existence sure to find the abode of Shiva as involution proceeds. The three Gunas of Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas are all within the domain of Creation and Prana, and would be altered with the evils of creation. Only Shiva is competent to sustain through as also keeping the poison or Halahal being the originator. It also expounds the arcane truth that even the Creator is within the domain of Brahmn that Absolute.

The truthiness has been harmed in Vaishnava Purana with Vishnu to offer grace or in Devi Puranas with Devi providing vital succour to the Lord . Nonetheless these have no validity…Halahala aka Kaalakutam is an anti-creation element. In Vedas whenever an anti-creation element arises, so also arises a nameless divinity to consumes it on behalf of the Devas. This Nameless divinity is Rudra. Confining the aspect of ?iva to just a single concept is impossible; in short, the essence or "tatva" of ?iva is a paradox. ?iva means “auspicious”, “foremost”, “un-manifested”, “raw”, “that which is not”. Earth provides us food (Amruta) as nourishment and the byproduct of that food is again taken by Earth itself. Rudra is that raw, unmanifested concept from which everything arises and again goes back.

On the other hand, Vi??u is Jagannatha (Jagat+Natha), meaning He is the only destiny (Natha) to be reached in Jagat (reality). This is why Rig Vedas says that Vishnu resides in the highest of the 3 strides and all Rishi seek to reach that highest Stride. The same Veda call Rudra Jagathampathaye, pathi is not lord/ruler, Pathi means abode or resort. Jagathpati means “that in which all realities reside” or “the abode of all realities”. So here is the answer to your question: Rudra is an abode for everything, Pa?ūpati: “Abode of all Beings tiled in the cycle of life” , he is Satpatim “Abode/master of all beings”, he is Bhutapati “Lord of all beings”, he is dishām ca pataye: all directions/celestial mansions reside in him and finally, he is Jagatampathi: all realities abide in him.

All realities is the play of Shakti and all Cosmic Phenomenon is Rta. As Jagadguru Shri Chandrasekharendra Sarasvatī said “Sarvam Vi??u:mayam jagat”, meaning when one realizes that Jagat itself is Vi??u, then the one realizing this ceases to exist as a Jīva and becomes Ekam (Singularity); this state of ekam/union/yoga/linga/samyama is ?ivam (Supreme state of Bliss), hence “Sarvam Vi??u:mayam jagath: ?ivam”. That is why the hymn from Nārāya?a Sukta (Mahanarayana Upani?had) of Yajur:veda says one should meditate upon Vi??u (the all-pervasiveness) as the means of realizing the self, which is Nārāya?a. Since Vi??u is the only thing to achieve, a ?harma:patni (wife) addresses her husband as Pati or Natha or Swami.

In the ceremony of Vivaha (weddings) the groom is treated as Vi?h?u and the bride is treated as Lak?hmī. This very Vi?vām is nothing but Vi??u. To depict this, we have the story of K?īrāsagara manthana – in which the cosmic ocean was churned and both prosperity (Lak?mī) and anti-creation element (Halāhala) emerged. Whereas Lak?hmī went to the all-pervasive preserver Vi?h?u as his consort to support the preservation, the Halāhala went to and was devoured by Pārama ?iva. Hence the profound quote, “we grow as we dissolve” Like Earth that provides us food and nourishment and the byproduct of that food is again taken by Earth itself. Har Har Mahadev
