Loose Items in Vehicles, An ignored daily fact !

In reference to my previous article Unsafe Behavior Towards Children in Vehicles , another vital matter should be in place , as of constant ignorance of all human beings.

Loose items in vehicles and trucks, especially in high-risk industries like oil and gas, pose significant safety hazards. Inadequately secured cargo can lead to load shifts, items falling off, and loss of control of the vehicle.

This endangers not only the driver but also other road users. The following considerations and best practices, based on international standards and industry best practices, can help address and mitigate these risks:

?

  • Increased Accident Risk: Loose items can fly out of the truck, potentially causing accidents or injuring other road users.
  • Damage to Equipment: Shifting items may get damaged, leading to increased costs and downtime.
  • Conduct Pre-Trip Inspections: Check that all cargo is properly secured, using appropriate tie-downs and restraints. Make sure these inspections are part of standard operating procedures.
  • Use Appropriate Load Restraint Equipment: Secure items with ropes, straps, nets, or other suitable restraints rated for the weight of the cargo. All restraints should comply with local and international standards.
  • Load Distribution: Distribute the weight of the cargo evenly to avoid imbalance and instability, which can increase the risk of vehicle rollover.
  • Incident Reporting: This requires immediate reporting of incidents involving loose items to improve future load-securing practices.
  • Internal Communication: Encourage an open line of communication between HSE staff and drivers to ensure everyone understands the importance of load security.
  • ?Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS): Implement BBS programs to reinforce safe behaviours among drivers and loaders, focusing on securing cargo.

?By implementing these measures, we could save a disaster. Period
