Loopholes of Leadership by Sana Ehsan

Loopholes of Leadership by Sana Ehsan

Preface:

This article aims to help you identify gaps in your management style, and more importantly, the lack of self-awareness that often amplifies these issues. In our daily lives, we sometimes unknowingly behave in ways that lead to being labeled, and over time, we become so entrenched in these behaviors that they start to negatively impact us. After realizing this myself, having spent many precious years this way, I hope this article can inspire readers to embrace their unique qualities and fully enjoy the greatest gift of all—life.

?

We all possess leadership qualities, but the reason we often fail to recognize this lies in the barriers we create within ourselves, stemming from a lack of self-connection. Let’s explore what leadership truly means and why it’s essential for us to embrace it. "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way." —John C. Maxwell (Krosel, 2024)

Many people confuse leadership with management, assuming it's solely about authority, when in fact, it has nothing to do with authority at all. "Leadership is the capacity to translate a vision into reality." —Warren Bennis? (Krosel, 2024)

Well, if leadership is important, then what should we do to attain it? So, moving towards this journey, the first step is awareness. Imagine you're drowning, and it's a matter of life or death—what’s the first thing you do? Yes, you are thinking it right you’ll assess the situation and give everything you must to survive. The same level of effort and commitment is needed on this journey to leadership.

Leadership evolves on certain characteristics, some of which are innate, while others can be developed to succeed in the world. However, it's crucial to first understand what’s needed. Consider this: why would you listen to someone if their words don’t interest you? (Knight, 2023) This highlights the importance of authenticity, clear communication, a compelling vision, and the ability to influence others through knowledge and wisdom.

Wisdom cannot be bought; it can only be gained through curiosity, inquisitiveness, and analytical thinking. It’s the ability to deeply understand a situation by drawing on your experience and using analytical skills to focus on cause and effect, whether in situations or relationships. But should we care about relationships in the corporate world, and if so, why?

The most unique element in the workplace is the 'human being.' While everything else is replaceable, and technology will continue to advance, possibly taking over many aspects in the future, true success requires blending all essential ingredients, with humans being a crucial part. Relationships in the workplace matter, and empathy is a skill that can be easily learned with genuine effort and intent. It’s always our choice what we embrace, but we cannot complain about the outcomes of those choices. (Knight, 2023) The same applies to relationships and empathy—if we remove emotions, there’s no difference between humans and machines.

Many who consider themselves good leaders often lack empathy, and the ability to connect with others through shared emotions like respect, dignity, acceptance, and understanding of different perspectives. A well-balanced and inclusive culture, where diverse viewpoints are welcomed, fosters a thriving and supportive environment for everyone. (Knight, 2023) No leader, organization, or nation can truly grow and succeed without integrating these qualities into their system.

In the end, it all comes down to an individual’s adaptability. ?(Knight, 2023) Those who struggle with ambiguity or lack resilience will face many internal barriers. The world is dynamic and diverse, and to thrive, we must give our best effort, embrace the journey, and lead a purposeful life, to avoid feeling overwhelmed or 'drowning' in life.

Very well written indeed! Writing about leadership is always tricky as so much is already written about it but it was an intriguing read nevertheless. If I may take the liberty of small criticism - it's just that the article could benefit from a more structured approach to its argument. While the insights are valuable, they seem scattered, and the reader might struggle to find a coherent, overarching thesis. Additionally, while quoting from prominent leadership thinkers adds depth, the article could delve further into practical examples or case studies to ground these ideas in real-world applications.
