Looking for some new, challenging work

I am an academically-oriented applied economist (Ph.D. Econ MIT 1980). I am looking to do something new and challenging with some of my time.

In June 2020, I published Core Economics: Concepts & Applications. Volume 1. It is available on Amazon https://tinyurl.com/ybrjw9hd, Amazon India https://tinyurl.com/y9n7eh8z and other Amazon sites. There’s a brief description below. More details and free excerpts are available at www.profmathur.com

When I wrote this book, I did nothing else. Just wrote day and night. No writer’s block – the exact opposite. Now, as I sit down to write my next book, I am looking to do something new and challenging as an economist with about one-third of my time.

After my Ph.D., I taught mainly graduate courses 1981-88 and supervised several doctoral dissertations at the American University (AU), Washington, DC. Then, I became an independent consultant. In 2019, I was recruited by Johns Hopkins SAIS ERE as an Adjunct Lecturer, with teaching to begin in January 2020. However, my class was cancelled just before teaching began (which gave me the time to write the Core Economics book).

I usually look for something new every 7-10 years. I am looking to work on new and challenging issues I am able to pick up new subject areas quickly, as shown by me recent work as a forensic economist (see below) I am open to all ideas.

My skills

My main skills are:

  1. Ability to write quickly, clearly, and concisely. Most of the reviews of my Core Economics book on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08B384LQC make this point. For example, Afsaneh Michaels writes: “ I am not an economist but I found it extremely accessible and easy to relate to.” Another reviewer, not identified, writes: “As an economics student and have read economics text books through my undergraduate and graduate studies all along. I have not come across a simpler book on basic economics than this book, Core Economics. This book is an easy going story, jargon free and I helps understand concepts in the simplest manner possible.” You can read the free excerpts at www.profmathur.com to check this.
  2. Able to generate fresh, workable ideas to tackle real-world problems. This is what the World Bank hired me for – to get electricity to tough, remote areas.
  3. Able to work with a team, and respond in a flexible, timely manner - no hassles about weekend, late night, etc. I have worked with several teams worldwide and in the US. Plus, I have been working from home for years. So, I have plenty of experience.
  4. Good with numbers. I used to teach econometrics courses at the American University.

My U.S. work

I have wide-ranging U.S. policy and operational experience.

In the last couple of years, I have done some work as a forensic economist. This involves calculating the economic loss suffered by a plaintiff who has been injured or died. I am scheduled to make these presentations:

  • With my colleague Jerome Paige at a webinar on Race, Gender & Ethnicity in the Estimation of Lost Earnings & Earnings Capacity https://tinyurl.com/y3ouv37e on Aug 26, 2020.
  • At the January 2021 conference organized by the National Association of Forensic Economics.

I have worked in the U.S. energy sector as an expert witness in utility rates cases and as a renewable energy expert.

In the 1990s, I worked for the U.S. Postal Service, and testified before the Postal Service’s regulator. I have also occasionally worked on health issues.

My World Bank work

I was a consultant 1990-2019, working on the economic and financial design of path-breaking renewable energy and rural electrification projects in Asia and Africa.

  • Most recent operational project. Nigeria Electrification Project. $ 350 million World Bank loan for solar electricity via mini grids and standalone solar systems in unserved rural areas.

I have also worked on major reports. Recent examples:

My most recent work as an editor: 2020 -2021

I have become an editor - a person who actually edits documents written by others. I have been doing this implicitly for many reports that I worked on for the World Bank and US agencies.

  • I have edited two Country Update reports produced by the World Bank for two Central Asian countries.
  • I have worked with a doctoral student in Australia.
  • My niche is academic materials (dissertations, journal articles) and agency reports (periodic updates).
