Looking for Purpose & Success in Your Career? Do this!

Happy New Week Fam!

My eyes are barely open this morning as I pen down this career magic musing.?After 18 months of no grand dancing, I accidentally in the last minute as the universe would have it (surely what is yours cannot escape you) found out that the King himself, Black Coffee was in town. ?If you don’t know this guy, he is the world’s number one Afro house DJ, a philanthropist, a label owner and an entrepreneur.?After 11 hours of non-stop dancing, am going to need a lot more black coffee today.

Black Coffee is for me the perfect cocktail of Passion + Purpose + Mastery. He is a legend. The God of the dance hall. When he hits the decks, his sole mission is to awaken your godhood. ?I danced through his set thinking, ''dem, our ancestors must be smiling down proud''.

And they must be. He is a global phenomenal!

Black Coffee holds the Guinness World Record for the longest ever one-handed DJ set, after playing for 60 hours non-stop at Maponya Mall in Soweto. He lost the use of his left arm as a teenager when a speeding car ran over a crowd back in 1990 during the celebrations of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison.

Which brings me to our conversation today, what does it take for one to successfully live a purposeful career?

1) Passion

...is a strong desire.?A strong feeling of wanting something to be. It’s your secret wishes and dreams. Your other life if you let go of the mundane. It’s the activities and experiences that won’t stop seducing your attention. It’s the universe wanting to be expressed through you. It’s what you are here to create. ?Is it to live a beautiful life? To see a more connected/compassionate world? To experience more art? Own a few islands in the Caribbean? Protect mother earth? To end human suffering? See more justice in the world?...

What is this for you?

2) Purpose

...over and over again I encounter professionals stuck at, ''I can't find what my purpose is''. The reason is simple, one thinks it’s out there waiting to be found. While the truth is, your purpose is your strong desires /passion orchestrated to create a better world. ?So if you are finding it hard to nail down your purpose, you might be asking the wrong questions. Tune in to your desires. ?We are complex humans thus you will find you have many desires. Find the patterns. Connect the dots. Find the main 2-3 themes. And then ask yourself, ''how might my desires be a path for me to live and work more purposefully?'' ''What work experiences do I need to seek to action my desires?'' And, ''how will this shape the world around me for good?'' There you have your purpose.

3) Mastery

... masters have one thing in common, an intentional commitment to their learning journey. To fully enjoy the fruits of one’s purpose, one must endeavour to be extraordinary at their craft. Purpose without sharpened skills is well, not so helpful. It took 20 years for Black Coffee to achieve the Guinness World Record. Two years back he shared he is going back to college to study interior design. He dropped out of college to take care of his family.

Narrow down the 3-4 skills you need to be really great at for you to bring your purpose to life. Become a master in these areas. And as you do so, slowly drop everything else. ?

Thanks for sharing. Often times we look at Purpose as this one big mission that is bigger than ourselves; whilst some might be living their purpose unknowingly simply because they fail to look at the patterns as you described. I think the concept of "Ikigai" covers very well the 3 elements that you described abd provide clear guidance on how to move from Vocation - Profession - Mission to Purpose
