Looking for a Marketing Director with Proven Leadership and a Record Excellence?

Written by Sloan H. Newman, Master of Arts and Master of Science

Recently, I was asked, 'how did you go from MSLGROUP UK to Fox Plumbing & Heating?' It’s not the first time that I’ve been asked this question, but it’s always hard to answer this question. As a marketing communications professional who has had years of global experience, I never had the opportunity to see my work on a local level. I wasn’t sure that what I was doing was making a difference. In my current role, I am able to see all aspects of what we are striving for and the feeling of accomplishment when we succeed.

My career started off in Charleston, SC and has taken me to three continents and landed me in Seattle. Here is a brief history of my professional progression.

Working in a hugely competitive field where Top of Mind Awareness (TOMA) is the lifeblood of the plumbing and HVAC industry has provided exciting challenges and opportunities. This industry is so competitive that not being TOMA for more than a few weeks can lead your company into huge layoffs or even bankruptcy. This makes my role highly competitive and exciting from day-to-day.

Being the Marketing Director allows me the opportunity to make and execute important decisions that can change the growth and progress of our company. I’ve lead almost all aspects of marketing roles and skills at only 13+ years of experience. I’ve worked in public relations, qualitative and quantitative market research, business development, advertising, event management, executive leadership, sales, digital marketing and pre-roll advertising, media buying, direct mailings, data mining, and negotiations. All of these individual parts have lead to becoming an integrated marketing professional. Having been an avid chess player and fencer, I always try and stay three moves ahead of my competition. These experiences have been key in keeping my progression and growth moving forward without stagnation. And constantly coming up with ideas to stay ahead of the competition has allowed me to love what I do. In 2015, I won an award for using social media and PR to run a campaign that put a lucky person in a cockpit of an Aero L-39 Albatros/ Patriot Jet.

While holding the title of Marketing Director, I have simultaneously been the youngest president of the Puget Sound American Marketing Association from 2015/16. For an association with a 57-year-old history, it was a wonderful privilege. Sitting on this volunteer board gave me the opportunity to plan more than just three moves ahead. I took an association and put into place a strategy to that has taken their accounts into the black, created a higher caliber of interest, and a process that has already outlived my tenure.

Jim Kilts preached about ‘Doing What Matters’ and understanding the overarching concept to frame and filter issues. My roles have allowed me to do just that, focus on doing what really matters and to drive and create Total Brand Value or brand equity. Fox Plumbing & Heating has been able to increase their brand equity and awareness exponentially since I took over marketing at Fox. I will always be grateful for the experiences provided to me by David and his company. However, I am now searching to find the next step in my professional progression.

Are you able to provide me with the challenges and responsibilities that I seek? Is your team ready for skilled leadership and knowledge of execution of campaigns across multiple landscapes? Then take a moment and reach out to me directly. Because the question isn’t, "How did I get to this role?" It’s, "How will I continue to grow both personally and professionally in future roles, and will I be a part of your team or theirs?"
