Towards the end of 2022, I was approached by the MD and the HR Head of an MNC based out of New Zealand who were looking at identifying an MD for their India operations. They wanted someone who not only had a strong Technical and Operations expertise in their field of business, but also someone with a strong commercial orientation. They were also concerned about the cultural fit between a mature individual with the requisite gravitas for the position of MD would have in what is essentially a very young, dynamic and rapidly growing organisation. These seemingly conflicting requirements are the typical challenges in identifying and placing an MD from outside the organisation. The virtual meetings I had with my clients gave me an adequate understanding of their business, and the interactions I had with them gave me an idea of their global organisation culture that they wanted to replicate in India through key hires.

Because of their high profile, visibility and impact ; identifying the right candidate for any CXO level position is always critical. My 25 year corporate career gave me exposure to Global CEOs and CXOs of multiple organisations, and helped me develop an unerring knack for spotting talent early. I lean on this expertise gained over the years when I meet virtually with every potential candidate who forms part of the shortlist we send to our clients. While the team and I may speak with and evaluate over a 100 applicants, we typically shortlist just 4 or 5 to meet with the client organisation. In the example above, the top candidate on our shortlist was the one selected by the client.

By focusing exclusively on just 1 or 2 mandates at a time, we are able to focus all our energies on each search that we undertake, and so bring about quick closures for our clients.
