Looking for a job? Stop just applying online and start talking to people.

Let me take you back to the Summer of 2009—I had just graduated college (a glorious moment, but with the slight caveat that the 2008 recession was still hanging around like that one relative who doesn’t know when to leave). Finding a job was... well, let’s just say it wasn’t easy.

Then I met Steve Click , a friend of my late father, who gave me the advice that completely changed my approach: “Who are you talking to?”

It was simple. It was profound. And it was exactly what I needed to hear. Instead of spraying my resume everywhere like confetti and hoping for a miracle, I started to focus on finding the right people to talk to.

As a sales professional, I spend my days identifying the right contacts in organizations—decision-makers, influencers, etc. But this skill doesn’t come naturally to everyone, especially if you're not in sales.

So, here’s the advice I wish I had known back in 2009, and that I still practice today:

Instead of blindly hitting “apply” and waiting for a response, try reaching out and starting a conversation. Whether it's a recruiter, a hiring manager, or someone already working at the company—talking to the right person can be a game-changer.

Here’s why:

?? You’ll stand out. You’re no longer just another resume in a pile; you’re a person they’ve actually interacted with. ?? You’ll learn more. No job description will ever give you the inside scoop on the team or role like a real conversation will. ?? It shows you care. Taking the time to connect shows you’re genuinely interested in the role, not just throwing your resume at everything with a job title.

So, how do you get that conversation started?

?? Send a quick, personalized message on LinkedIn. Mention something specific about the job or the company that caught your eye. ?? Ask questions that show you’ve done your homework and are genuinely curious. ?? And keep it brief—they’re busy too!

At the end of the day, hiring isn’t just about qualifications. It’s about people. You’re more than a resume—you’re a conversation waiting to happen.

?? Your dream job might be one chat away.
