Looking for a fun way to spend an evening and support women and girls across London?

It’s May and as we all start getting ready for what we hope will be a safe and sunny summer, we’re popping by to update you on what’s happening here at Solace.??

First up we have one of our favourite nights of the year…? ?

Come and join us for the third year of?eCubed’s?Jazz Against Violence, raising money for Solace at the famous Holborn Jazz Club: downstairs at Pizza Express Live! where iconic artists such as Laura Mvula, Morcheeba, Chrissie Hynde and?Annie Lennox have perfomed.

The evening will feature two amazing artists,?Anita Wardell?and Hayley Poleon, between 6.00pm – 10.30pm. Judy Kawaguchi, Founder of?eCubed?and a former Trustee of Solace Women’s Aid, will also be returning with?fun well-known jazz standards influenced by Gershwin.?

There will be raffles, live auctions, drinks and food you can enjoy at your table.?

Doors Open at 6.00pm so you can meet up, eat and drink, and catch-up with your friends before the start of the programme. Great music to follow starting at 7pm.

Launch of the Women's Rough Sleeper Census

You may have seen in the press that we’ve also been doing some important partnership work on the national Women’s Rough Sleeping Census. Did you know that women are rough sleeping in significantly higher numbers than previously?recognised -?likely between 4-9 times higher than government statistics show?? Earlier in May, we launched the first national Women’s Rough Sleeping Census Report, authored by Change Grow Live with support from Solace and Single Homeless Project (SHP). Led by Solace, SHP and London Councils, the census covered 41 local authorities across England, hearing directly from 815 women experiencing rough sleeping.?

The findings demonstrate that women’s rough sleeping is often hidden, transient and intermittent, making women much harder to reach with support, and that current definitions and systems do not meet the needs of women. While these findings do not come as a surprise to Solace, they underline the experiences of women and that systems currently designed to support those experiencing rough sleeping are excluding women.?

The women talk about sleeping in McDonalds or riding on buses all night and the fear of abuse and assault they experience whilst homeless. It’s vital that more is done to support women and to create safe accommodation.?

Solace board and leadership meeting

We’ve recently recruited some new trustees, so last week, the board and leadership team met at the historic Houses of Parliament to focus in on the future strategic direction of Solace. They discussed key priorities for the upcoming year, including how we celebrate our 50th year, and agreed the board’s role in supporting the culture and values we want to champion across our organisation, so we can continue with our collective courage and resilience to support our service users in London to build safe and strong lives.??
