Looking for an extra $69 to $110/acre this season?

That question really caught my attention - did it catch yours?

When a farmer remarked, "It's the best thing we did, and our yields show it." I was listening for the solution.

The solution? Split N Applications: In corn on this farm, split N applications out yielded single programs by an average 17 bushels per acre, while triple application out yielded single pass programs by an average of 27 bushels. If corn is $4 per bushel, that's an extra $69 and $110 per acre, respectively, compared to a single pass!

While split nitrogen application aren't necessarily easier, nitrogen applied closer to when corn or any plant needs it, increases yield, instead of applying 7 to 9 months prior, which can increase the chance for leaching and lost money.

There are some pretty easy ways to save money, boost crop yield that costs just a few dollars and it doesn't take much time.

 Before Planting:

1.Pre-Plant Nitrate Test (PPNT)

·    Collect PPNT soil samples after last frost in spring and prior to planting

·    Lab results measure nitrogen in the root zone carried over from last year

·    Not recommended for sandy soils

·    Same day results if samples arrive at the VAS lab before noon- Print Sample Submission Form

 After Planting:

1. Pre-Sidedress Nitrogen Test (PSNT) - View Example Report

·   Collect PSNT soil samples when corn is 6-12" tall or 4-6 weeks after planting - Open Sampling Guide

·    Lab results reveal nitrogen released from previous crop, manure, OM, and N carry over. Lab report provides nitrogen recommendation

·    Not recommended for sandy soils

·    Same day results if samples arrive at the VAS lab before noon - Print Sample Submission Form

2.Early Season Plant Tissue Tests - View Example Report

·    Collect tissue from crop emergence and again throughout growing season. Testing earlier in season provides window to perform application

·    Collect the proper sample for each crop - Open Sampling Guide

·    Results show all key plant nutrients and nitrogen level - Print Sample Submission Form

During Application:

1.Plan for an In-field Check Strip -

·    Check strips ensure crop response and effectiveness of rate(s) used. This will allow you to compare success not only at harvest, but throughout the growing season.
