Looking for change in Sector…
The one clear inference our interaction with professionals during the #Lockdown through our initiative “Career Advice” has been professionals looking to explore and identify suitable opportunities outside their Sector.
It is logical as professionals are worried on the impact that the pandemic and subsequent lockdown globally would have on their businesses. All businesses are likely to be impacted; some more than the other. We are heading for a phase in life where we are less likely to socialize and mode of communication is more likely to go digital.
Everyone has been experimenting with #workfromhome with varying degree of success. In times to come more and more businesses would strive to create/experiment with new aspects of #workfromhome. The economies of scale of operation, productivity, teamwork, performance will all be evaluated.
All in all we are headed for #CHANGE.
… Understanding one’s requirement…
The period under #Lockdown has given us enough #opportunity to spend some time with oneself. All across the globe people have been spending some quality time with self… understanding, analyzing and re-living our own life over time. All good, bad, sweet, sour and any other emotion I might have missed out on would have been evaluated comprehensively.
Going forward it is imperative that one understands one’s requirements from the profession. The #career path one has taken, the #success one has had in the profession, the amount of money one is making and the level one has reached on the corporate ladder. Some of you might also like to add the car one owns, the holiday destination one has been to and the address were one resides.
Now truthfully try and evaluate the same against the #target you had set for yourself in life. Be sincere… You would have set a #goal… a career path, the amount of money that would satisfy you and the level on the corporate ladder you wanted to reach. I requested for truthfulness and sincerity because it is humane to re-calibrate en-route. Our friends, family, relatives, peers all help us in re-calibrating whether we like it or not and it is always one way… up.
The exercise would help you in understanding one’s requirement… in the true sense. Fine tune the same because the clarity would help you in achieving #Success
… Identifying one’s skills and expertise…
Once you have identified and understood your requirement from your #career / life it is time to evaluate the #skills and expertise that you have built up in your professional #career. This requires another truthful re-visit as right through your #career you would have received recommendations or praise from your superiors, clients and colleagues. Some of them would be documented others orally done.
Start penning down #skills and expertise that you identify and slowly your list would get prepared. Another way to add to the list would be an open discussion with a peer who has a balanced approach. Ask him/her to identify your strengths/weaknesses. A genuine discussion would help you in identifying your areas of strength/skills/expertise and weaknesses… areas you need to work upon.
One has to be very sharp as I have generally noticed professionals overlook skills which they have as they never valued them or identified with them. So write down even the smallest such item and let its importance be judged at a later date, when one evaluates everything that is on offer.
… Evaluating Opportunities…
Now we come to the most challenging part and that is evaluating #opportunities available in the #industry. The professional needs to identify suitable #opportunities available in different industry segment based on one’s requirement and skills/expertise that one has identified. One will have to go through LinkedIn, Naukri, Timesjobs, IIMJobs, etc. to get the right mix of #career options in the desired field.
Care has to be taken in understanding clearly the requirement of #skills, #expertise, #domain #experience and #salary fitment. A detailed scrutiny of such opportunities will help one prepare a list of #industry segment, skills, expertise etc. which are in demand.
At this juncture we are ready with our requirements, our list of skills and expertise and also with what is required in the industry. Obviously there are going to be gaps in what we offer and what is required and not all skills can be acquired at one go and neither is it feasible to go for it. Hence we need to focus on areas of interest which can be targeted...
… Resume Writing…
The checklist with one’s carefully identified #career requirement, list of #skills / expertise and the opportunities available in the market is ready and we move on to writing a well crafted #Resume. The story has to be well thought of and in sync with the requirement. #Resumewriting has to be very focused and crisp in order to generate ‘eyeballs’.
Proper care has to be taken to draw out the #skills and create a link with the #career profile. Once the #CV is ready it has to be correctly displayed on the various portals with the relevant keywords identified for searches. One has to be prepared with the relevant info on current/expected #salary, joining time frame and relocation option if any.
