Looking Back at 2023 and Ahead to 2024

Looking Back at 2023 and Ahead to 2024

Season’s greetings! I hope you’re all enjoying this time as we prepare to close the chapter on 2023 and begin anew in 2024. On a global level and in the world of work, all that’s transpired this year continues to impact us. As we look forward to the opportunities that accompany a new year, it’s also important to reflect on how much the world of work changed in the past year.

Looking Back at 2023

Several trends, including the growing gig economy, rising automation, quiet quitting and a workforce reshuffle, among others, continued pushing the world of work to evolve. With skills-based hiring strategies becoming more prominent among hiring teams, the job search landscape will likely continue evolving in 2024.

In 2023, we saw the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) usage, which left its digital mark on countless job sectors and roles by helping streamline processes and improve efficiencies. Amid this technological adoption, economic uncertainty persisted. As we grappled with inflation and high interest rates, we simultaneously saw announcements for returns-to-office and layoffs.

Despite highs and lows in 2023, the workforce strengthened with over 2.5 million jobs gained between January and November. Over 47,000 contingent workers were hired this year, indicating strong and healthy growth in the staffing industry.

Softening in the job market is needed for economic prosperity. If unemployment remains too low, then the Federal Reserve would be forced to raise interest rates, which would continue to hinder consumer spending and put more pressure on the economy. We’re seeing similar occurrences in the staffing industry with an overall slowdown. While an increase in the monthly unemployment rate may seem like a negative for the economy, we’re at very low levels compared to yearly unemployment rates under normal economic conditions.

Amid the shifts that occurred in 2023, professionals remained resilient, adapted and grew. With the year coming to a close, many are evaluating what their lives and careers looked like this year to create a prosperous New Year.

Looking Ahead to 2024

As we await 2024, we continue facing what’s turning into an existential threat: the climate crisis. Globally, 2023 was the hottest year on record. Bringing Earth back to balance requires a global effort. On a personal level and with decisions in the business world, such as supporting or partnering with organizations that make concentrated efforts for our planet, let’s all do what we can to make environmentally sustainable progress.

Much of the world has returned to pre-pandemic normalcy, as seen by several months of job market growth totaling under 200,000 in the latter half of 2023. However, there is room for improvement. We haven’t yet achieved equity for all, but we can with continued commitment and action to ensure everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

If you’re currently employed and considering a career change, try exploring opportunities within your organization for professional growth. With the job market cooling, switching employers could be more challenging compared to a year ago. To those looking for a new job, remain diligent to find what aligns with your journey and goals.

Regardless of career stage, the continuous pursuit of knowledge is an invaluable capability. Leveling up by amplifying skill proficiencies or learning new skills helps prepare for shifts in 2024. The constantly evolving nature of the world of work requires focus. I encourage you to continue working to create the personal and professional life you deserve.

Let’s all continue Making It Happen for ourselves, the world of work and Earth. Make positive impacts whenever possible.
