The coronavirus pandemic has had a negative impact on our physical and mental health as a nation and as individuals.
In the United States alone, we have lost more than 600,000 lives. The impact of these deaths is incalculable. We will all feel their absence—not just missing their physical presence but missing the contributions they would have continued to make had they not been taken from us.
Many of us have spent more than a year in some form of quarantine, living constrained lives either in close quarters with loved ones or in depressing isolation.
School-age children have had to adjust to distance-learning routines and have missed out on social interactions and activities that contribute to their health and development.
Seniors, often already isolated, have had to do without the physical comfort of their friends and family; more than a year without hugging a grandchild.
Individuals able to work from home have seen their careers diverted in unimagined ways and their incomes threatened or eliminated. Being home with family has led many to recalibrate their work-life balance.
Individuals unable to work from home have been called “essential” and have been asked to risk their lives in order to help everyone else, while earning on average far less than those they are protecting.
And rather than bringing us together in shared sacrifice, the pandemic seems to have exacerbated our differences and divisions.

In the face of such wide-ranging tragedy it has been hard to narrowly focus on job-search issues. But there are millions of people who lost their job during the pandemic or feel trapped in a current role. There are millions of people who feel overpowered by all the new candidates applying for suddenly remote jobs. There are millions of people who feel they need to make a change .?.?. but don’t know how.
This is why I am so excited?to announce the publication of my sixth book,?The Portable Perpetual Paycheck,?which builds up my prior job-search books, and provides practical and specific guidance related to how to find a job and navigate the post-pandemic and potentially remote workplace. This book?will help both active and passive job seekers see that they can turn things around.?
I know it’s not simple. I know it will take some work. But at the time I’m writing this post, there are 7,000,000 open jobs in the United States. And, when you think that the acceptance of remote work means you can apply for jobs around the world, there are even more open positions within your reach.
Remember, you only need one job.?
So take a deep breath.??Yes, it can be a bit daunting, but all of it is doable. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. While there are new challenges, there are also new opportunities. You’ve got the skills and the knowledge. You can do this. You’ve done things that were a lot harder. You lived through the coronavirus pandemic, and I know you can do this.
You've got this!
