Look Out For Your Well Being

The year 2020 will go down in history as challenging for many reasons both nationally and personally for all of us. For me it feels like I'm stuck in a ball game in the batter's box at the plate and constantly facing Clayton Kershaw's curveball. I am zoned in on what I think is a fastball coming at me and then the nastiest curveball in baseball takes a 5' drop away from me.

If you are like me you are working just as hard on furlough as if you were working at your job. No we aren't working our jobs but we are working our minds and our brands. We are strategizing and adjusting our goals to meet today's demands and setting us up for success tomorrow. We are doing everything we can to hit the ground running when we return to the workforce bringing a better us than they have ever seen.

On our jobs we get vacation time and it is important that we take advantage of that for our well being to keep us refreshed and enjoy our life and families. On furlough it is just as important to take that time to relax and enjoy your family and life. With my furlough just over four months now I find myself concerned for others that are also on furlough. Are you looking after your well being mentally as well as physically? For me when I find myself being controlled by my patience I know it is time to get away from not only my home office but my house as well. We all have that favorite place to disappear to that lets us forget about everything but the moment in front of us.

My place was Cape Lookout out in the hook. With the lighthouse behind me and a pool of dolphins swimming, eating, and playing in front me, it was my moment. It was my moment of total calm from anything else going on. I was with family, I was in a boat fishing, I was fascinated with the dolphins swimming around the boat and nothing else mattered.

My short time of relaxation and soaking in my surroundings is just what I needed to remind me of the patience needed as we all navigate this year. Make sure you are taking care of you well being mentally so when you rejoin your team you are ready to make an impact. Also check on your teammates and take note of their well being. Your phone call to them might be what they need to get through the week.

Having an outlet is crucial for me too. My "escapes" are weekly soccer games & an occasional motorcycle ride (often to visit family). 100% agree on checking in on your friends. My day has been brightened a few times by a simple call or text check in from a friend. Tough times, but we'll get through it.
