A Look at Mental Health

I recently wrote about mental health and how to complete a “psychological check-up,” citing the resources provided by our friends and members of the Connectivity Council . From your responses to that newsletter, it seems like this topic was timely for many of you.
I feel so lucky and privileged that I get to meet with thoughtful and smart people every day, whether that’s in business, psychiatry and mental health or at companies with new and innovative products. I sit on the board of NYU Langone Health, and I am honored to learn from faculty, team members and other members of the board. ?
When I learn something new or interesting, I am not “done” with it until I share it.
Moderating a discussion on mental health
Last month,?Techonomy, Worth, and CDX hosted the Health + Wealth?of America Conference in New York City. I had the pleasure?of?moderating a discussion with Dr. Charles Marmar, chair of the Department of Psychiatry at NYU, about how the pandemic has created the perfect storm for an increase in mental health issues.
Dr. Marmar explained that the pandemic has been challenging for everyone in the mental health field. But he says even before the pandemic, mental health has always been one of the major reasons that patients visited their primary physicians.
For example, Dr. Marmar pointed out that when he used to have a family practice as a general practitioner, 40% of his patients visited his office for mental health reasons. He said that many were struggling with depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug dependency, or had headaches, and stomach problems related to mental health.

The prevalence of mental health issues
"Psychiatric problems were pervasive before the pandemic; however, they have dramatically accelerated since the start of the pandemic. The number of patients presenting psychiatric problems has gone up 100%, and that figure also holds true for outpatient care. There has been a doubling in demand of people in crisis, suicidality, domestic abuse, and alcohol and drug use among other issues" -Dr. Charles Marmar
Technology and mental health
In addition to those people who need psychiatric help, the average American may be suffering from anxiety or stress and may be experiencing symptoms like lack of sleep due to the pandemic.
We created Connection Communities to provide free peer-to-peer support to develop thoughtful communities around Coping with Loss, Loneliness and Motherhood, among others. But sometimes, you need a little more. Dr. Marmar and his team at NYU Langone are developing an app called Cobalt to provide self-help diagnostic and remediation tools so that people can manage their own mental health.
I encourage you to leverage the power of technology to get access to the resources you need or to share them with others who may benefit.?

2 年Even the most emotionally resilient of us must sometimes feel like the title of the Peggy Lee classic hit "Is That All There Is?" as they wake up to pandemic anxiety and to a world that seems to be going sideways. As has been previously noted in response to Jim McCann's messages, friends and humor can help. The most valued friends are those you see in person, not on social media. Another classic hit from the Four Seasons might summarize our doing out best to sustain optimism: "Let's Hang on, to What We've Got."
