A Look Back—And Ahead

A Look Back—And Ahead

For 嘉科工程 , 2023 was a year of transformation—our teams across the globe tackling our world’s greatest challenges and opportunities on more than 25,000 projects. As we begin 2024, I thought I would share reflections from the past year and what I look forward to most in the year ahead.

Reflections on 2023

We modernized, expanded, and future-proofed infrastructure worldwide

We’ve seized opportunities to partner with our clients to modernize and rethink infrastructure—from London to Copenhagen, Malaysia to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In the United States, infrastructure funding is making its way through cities and communities and we’re modernizing ports, airports, bridges, tunnels, and railways. One example in the US is the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor project —recipient of the largest Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) funding award this year. Across all end markets, we’re helping clients think a step ahead about climate response and resilience.

In 2023 I visited many of our infrastructure modernization project sites across the globe, connecting with our clients and people that bring these projects to life. I visited the newly renovated Long Island Rail Road Mineola Station in New York, where we are expanding rail capacity for the community with a third track, and toured major infrastructure projects that will improve service for commuters on the ‘L’ transit system in Chicago, IL. On a visit to UAE, I connected with the Etihad Rail team working to increase connectivity throughout that region.

We’re engaged on all fronts of the energy transition

It’s clear the energy transition is well underway and due to accelerate. Our dedicated Energy & Power team is working with clients to expand renewable generation projects.? To effectively connect these sources of new power generation to where the demand exists, significant upgrades of electricity grids are being implemented across the globe. We’ve been in the middle of several high voltage interconnector projects of national significance in Germany, Australia and Southeast Asia. We’re also decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries like steel and iron ore through work with ThyssenKrupp Steel and Fortescue Future Industries.

Our Program Management team is truly reinventing tomorrow

Our Program Management offering is truly where we reimagine today and reinvent tomorrow. We hit critical milestones this year on some of the largest infrastructure programs in every market. Megaprojects like Dubai World Expo continue to serve their communities, this year as the site of COP28. We are driving similar outcomes for several giga programs that are part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

While in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, I visited the Qiddiya project site—part of the Vision 2030 initiative, an ambitious plan to transform the Kingdom’s economy and society through developing and improving infrastructure. I also visited New Zealand’s largest water project—Central Interceptor (CI)—a supersized wastewater tunnel through the center of Auckland which aims to provide cleaner waterways and future-proof wastewater infrastructure.

What’s most remarkable is what our people are able to achieve—delivering efficiently, safely, and sustainably on a 24/7 basis across our global footprint. This reputation for delivery excellence has kept us in the #1 slot on Engineering News Record’s list of Top 50 Program Management Firms (and #1 in many of our markets, too).

Clarity, Growth and Resilience in 2024?

Looking ahead, 2024 will be a year of opportunity for Jacobs.

Growth around the globe. We see very exciting growth prospects in the water sector. Globally, manufacturing of cutting-edge medicines and therapies is poised to grow. Demand for data centers and semiconductor fabs will also continue to rise.

Geographically, our Jacobs team is growing significantly in India, Scandinavia, Germany, and the Middle East, and we’re excited about manufacturing projects in Northern Europe, infrastructure work in Los Angeles as it gears up for several world events, and transit work in the US Northeast.

Photos from my visits to some of our growing offices around the world – India, United Arab Emirates, and Poland.

Doing more with digital solutions. Our capabilities continue to expand in remarkable ways.

Digital and AI platforms like Intelligent O&M (a predictive tool using Palantir’s Foundry) are helping water clients more efficiently manage life’s greatest resource. StreetLight is helping transportation clients understand dynamic travel behavior in real time to make the right infrastructure decisions with often limited funds. Clients are keen to understand the full scope of their carbon emissions, and newer tools like Jacobs’ Carbon First are giving them a comprehensive look at their footprint—and how to go about reducing it.

We were even able to undertake the real time analysis of traffic patterns around major stadiums during the Taylor Swift Eras tour. They’re all examples of ways we’re doing more for clients so they can do more for their communities.

Visit to a major wastewater treatment plant in Wilmington, DE. Jacobs is one of the largest private sector water utility operators in the US and the Wilmington site is among our most significant, where through our Palantir partnership and digital solutions like Aqua DNA and Intelligent O&M, we’re improving performance while taking care of our greatest natural resource.

Resilience for our clients and the company—from the Port of San Francisco to Galveston, Texas, and from Seattle-Tacoma Airport to Tyndall Airforce Base, we’re building resilience into critical infrastructure in the transportation, water, built environment, and national security sectors. And as a company, we’ll be more resilient to a dynamic business environment.

Photos from my visits to the Port of San Francisco Waterfront Resilience Program where we’re fortifying the century-old Embarcadero Seawall for earthquake safety, flood protection, resilience, and sea level rise adaptation and from my visit to Seattle, WA where I connected with the Port of Seattle who we are supporting in leading the 10-year upgrade of the S Concourse at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

To the Jacobs team, partners and clients – I thank you for your dedication and drive and am energized by the many opportunities before us. I’m tremendously proud of all we accomplished last year and look forward to seeing many of you this year.

Sir, I can work as helper. Sir, I can do the packing and cleaner work.
