A Look Back at an Exciting Week of RunThrough Events and Olympic Marathon Spotlight

Last week was packed with action at RunThrough , from fast-paced 5ks to challenging triathlons and scenic half marathons. Whether you were racing on the streets of Newcastle, conquering the Chilterns, or soaking in the beauty of Richmond Park, the energy and enthusiasm were palpable. Here’s a recap of the incredible events that took place:

August 7th - Quayside 5k and Junior 3k

The week kicked off with the Quayside 5k and Junior 3k, where runners enjoyed a picturesque evening along the Newcastle-Gateshead Quayside. The flat, fast course made for some impressive times, with participants of all ages taking on the challenge. The Junior 3k was a highlight, with young athletes showing determination and enthusiasm, proving that the future of running is bright in the North East.

August 11th - Run Solihull Half Marathon, 10k and Juniors

On Sunday, we moved to the heart of the West Midlands for the Run Solihull event. With Half Marathon, 10k, and Junior races, there was something for everyone. The support from the local community was fantastic, creating an atmosphere that fueled runners all the way to the finish. From seasoned half-marathoners to enthusiastic juniors, Solihull was a celebration of health, fitness, and local spirit.

August 11th - Richmond Park Half Marathon

Simultaneously, runners in London took to the paths of Richmond Park for a Half Marathon that offered both challenge and beauty. The undulating course through one of London’s most beloved parks provided a perfect mix of natural scenery and tough hills. For many, this race was an opportunity to push their limits and enjoy a Sunday morning surrounded by the serenity of Richmond Park.

August 11th - Guildford 10k and Juniors

We also headed to Guildford for the 10k and Junior races, an event that stood out not only for its fantastic course but also for its support of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices. Participants ran with purpose, knowing that their efforts were contributing to a cause that makes a real difference in the lives of families in need. The sense of community and generosity was truly inspiring, making the Guildford 10k and Juniors a memorable event for everyone involved.

Olympic Marathon Round-Up: Sifan Hassan’s Historic Victory

While we were busy racing across the UK, the world was watching one of the most thrilling marathons in Olympic history. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands delivered a breathtaking performance to win the women’s marathon in Paris, setting a new Olympic record with a time of 2:22:55.

In a dramatic finish, Hassan found herself in a fierce battle with Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia. As the two athletes fought for position in the final stretch, Hassan’s powerful kick proved decisive, propelling her to victory and securing her first Olympic gold in the marathon. This win adds to Hassan’s already impressive tally, marking her third medal at Paris 2024 and the sixth Olympic medal of her career.

The marathon also saw Tigst Assefa claim silver, just three seconds behind Hassan, while Hellen Obiri of Kenya took bronze with a time of 2:23:10. Obiri’s bronze adds to her collection of Olympic medals, following two silver medals on the track at Rio 2016.

Sifan Hassan’s victory is not just a personal triumph but a historic moment for the Netherlands, as she becomes the first Dutch athlete to win Olympic gold in the marathon. Her performance was a masterclass in endurance, strategy, and sheer willpower—a fitting highlight in what has been an extraordinary Olympic Games.
