As design industry professionals, whether you're part of a brand, manufacturer, or are a designer, we are all accustomed to assessing the quality of a finished product. Traditionally, value is assessed on five main principles:
The 'quality' or finish of a product that is manufactured is usually influenced by factors like its component properties, its manufacturing process and technique, how it has been stored as well as its sustainable properties.?
When our Director, Summer O. , spoke during a panel at Sustainable Style in November, interesting discussions arose about the linear longevity of products used in design. With products such as lighting, rugs and art highlighted during the panel talk, it brings new insight into the wider realm of furniture, furnishings, art and accessories which are key components in every design.
It's certainly one factor to consider the raw materials used in a design, but if that product or design must be replaced within 5, 10 years, and there are alternative materials that could extend the life of that product, this is a challenge we must set ourselves - to create an assessment that contains metrics including longevity or lifespan, to provide greater transparency that ultimately gives our end customer or buyer the full facts and figures, enabling them to make better decisions; for them and the planet too.
