Longevity in Music

Thank you to all of you lovely people who congratulated me on my business being around since 2000. Actually I've been singing professionally since 1995 but around 2000 was when the business was registered due to new ABN laws.
I just wanted to say something about longevity in music. Being a creative art, it's hard to stay vitalised and excited every day to perfect an art form that relies on your inner self 'feeling creative'. A great book about this is the Inner Game of Music. Aside from getting in the right head space, here's my top 5 tips for today.
1 Don't expect to feel creative everyday. Your brain will get accustomed to creating songs and new licks out of nothing if you give it the space to do so regularly - EVEN IF you don't feel creative.
2 Do the practice and you will improve. I'd rather be a 90% performer on my worst day than rely on a good day to be at 100%. What I've found is that my worst is a hell of a lot better than it used to be :)
3 A rest is as good as a vacation. Music takes time to master but there's a real benefit in time out as well. I've often found that a few days off every month or two brings me back stronger than months of slogging away continuously.
4 Keep it fresh. Learn new songs, new instruments or arrangements of familiar tunes. Listen to different people. Change is good.
5 See other musicians live and never be too proud to take a class and learn. A lot of musicians think that being professional means you can't take a class from a colleague. If you don't learn, you don't continue to improve. Always be humble and continue to learn for us all.
Hope you enjoyed that! For my music, please go here to listen and download. To follow me on Facebook please go here.
