The Longest Journey...
"The longest journey you will ever take is the 18 inches from your head to your heart" Andrew Bennett (British Politician). This quote is considered to be one of the understatements of the century. I read it today, as part of some other work I am looking into and I have to agree, on so many levels.
I felt compelled to share it, although I feel many will be already aware of it, I'm sure. To me this quote describes the journey which encompasses the transformation of mere knowledge into genuine understanding, and the transition from thinking to feeling. This journey cannot be traversed easily and if abandoned 'half-way', it feels like somewhere there, is where we find ourselves today, in global terms. Adrift from our thinking and our ability for self-reflection, empathy, and a willingness to embrace vulnerability. In an abyss of depersonalisation and derealisation.
There are so many influential individuals in this world who provide insight into the profound journey to recognise the immense power of our thoughts and beliefs. The manifestation of the world we live in. If we could only take the full journey and understand that knowledge alone does not define wisdom. True wisdom lies in the ability to connect our thoughts to our emotions, to bridge the gap between rationality and empathy.
Critically, as individuals when we embark on this inner voyage, we will begin to unravel the layers of conditioning and biases that cloud our perception. We will challenge the preconceived notions that have shaped our thinking and open ourselves up to different perspectives. It is through this process that we will develop the capacity to empathise with others, to genuinely understand their experiences and emotions.
This journey requires more than just intellectual growth; it necessitates emotional courage. Our hearts, often guarded by walls of self-preservation, must be willing to break free from the shackles of fear and vulnerability. It is in this vulnerability that true connection and compassion lie. By embracing our own emotions and allowing ourselves to be affected by the joys and sorrows of others, we unlock the transformative power of empathy.
The ‘18 inches’ between our brain and heart symbolise the distance between knowledge and wisdom, between understanding and compassion. It is a journey that demands self-awareness, introspection, and a commitment to personal growth. Along this path, we discover that true wisdom is not measured by the vastness of our knowledge, but by the depth of our understanding, empathy, and love for our fellow human beings.
In the end, this greatest journey is not just about transforming ourselves, but also about the positive impact we can have on the world around us. As we cultivate compassion and understanding within, we become beacons of light, inspiring others to embark on their own transformative journeys.
Imagine the ripple effect of empathy, spreading kindness and love in a world that so desperately needs it.

Many years ago I was given the opportunity to study Heart-brain coherence at the HeartMath institute in USA. HeartMath is a term used to describe the harmonious synchronisation between the heart and the brain. It refers to the state when the heart and brain are working together in perfect alignment, creating a state of optimal functioning and well-being. This coherence plays a significant role in our emotional and mental well-being.
When the heart and brain are in coherence, there is a smooth and efficient communication between them, which allows for better decision-making, increased focus, and enhanced cognitive abilities. It is as if the heart and brain are engaged in a beautiful dance, exchanging information and energy seamlessly.
Scientific research has shown that heart-brain coherence is associated with numerous benefits for our overall health. It has been found to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while increasing feelings of positivity, calmness, and emotional stability. This coherence also has a positive impact on our immune system, cardiovascular health, and even improves our sleep quality.
One of the most effective ways to achieve heart -brain coherence is through practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, and mindfulness. These techniques help us tap into the power of our heart's intelligence and synchronise it with our brain's logical thinking. By intentionally shifting our focus to our heart and practicing coherence-building techniques, we can create a profound connection between our heart and brain.
Cultivating positive emotions like gratitude, love, and compassion can also contribute to heart-brain coherence. When we experience these emotions, our heart rhythm becomes more coherent, sending signals to the brain that positively affect our overall well-being. It's a beautiful feedback loop where the heart generates positive emotions, which in turn enhance our brain function and emotional balance.
In a world where stress and distractions can easily overwhelm us, nurturing heart-brain coherence becomes even more crucial.
At the core of HeartMath research and techniques is the understanding that the heart is not just a simple pump but a powerful organ that communicates with the brain and influences our emotions and perceptions. It has its own intelligence, often referred to as "heart intelligence," which can be cultivated and harnessed for personal growth and transformation.
As the weekend begins and for many the 'pace' of the week drops down a notch or two, it may be a time for contemplation, on the importance of this 18 inch journey. The development of coherence. I know I am. If we are to be catalysts for positive transformation, to play our part in this global shift towards a more harmonious future for the next generations. Today is as good a day as any, wouldn't you agree?
