Companies like Google, Amazon and Facebook are so powerful because they never focus on short term financial metrics. They defy pressures of financial markets to focus on short term goals at expense of their future.

Nobody built a long term future on short term thinking.

Long term thinking must include people development - hiring, training, empowerment.

Median number of years an employee stays with a company is 4.2 years. Thus, employees are lasting assets even at 4.2 years.

But for Google and Facebook the median tenure is much higher than 4.2 years - it is almost impossible to hire anyone away from these companies because of employee loyalties. The empowerment, training and trust they receive is too much even for the best recruiters to overcome.

It does not make sense to hire smart people, and have them follow stupid rules.

It does not make sense to hire smart people, and not to empower them.

It does not make sense to hire smart people, and keep them entirely on short-term tactical objectives.

I am astounded that there are companies like Google, Apple, Amazon who still follow the tag line" our employees are our best assets" and actually live by it. The rest of the big boys are quarter driven to the point that employees become just "net contributors".
