Long-Term Sitting and Technology: How They’re Effecting Our Health!


Technology is a great thing!? I’m sure that we can all agree that it has benefited our lives in so many ways over the past few decades.? But, because of this great technology we all enjoy, people have been sitting more and more.? Many adults now spend the majority of their day sitting with long commutes and more sedentary jobs.

Many published research studies have linked prolonged sitting to many health concerns. These include obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and unhealthy cholesterol levels.? Prolonged sitting and inactivity seem to also increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.? That being said, it would make total sense to get up and get moving to manage your health and your life! Here are a few ideas to consider when working on minimizing your sitting and increasing your activity.?


  • Take a break from sitting every 30-45 minutes.
  • Stand while talking on the phone or watching television.
  • Walk on a treadmill while watching television.
  • Take your smartphone outside for a walk while you listen to your favorite show or podcase.
  • If you work at a desk, try a standing desk, a high table or counter.
  • Stand up when making a presentation!? Your energy and performance will be better!?
  • Schedule a walking meeting with colleagues instead of sitting in the office or conference room. You’ll notice that you will even think better!
  • Position your work surface above a treadmill and walk while you work.
  • If driving, get out and walk around every few hours.
  • Schedule exercise in your day!? Keep your appointment with yourself!? It is a great way to manage your stress and create a healthy lifestyle for years to come.


Implementing some of these ideas into your daily routine will provide you with the ability to ward off many chronic health concerns and improve your health while providing you with more energy and focus.? What ideas are you adding to your daily routine??
