This is a mind-boggling trend or lack thereof. Modern computing technologies bring automation and therefore a reduction in jobs for some more manual jobs. How is a country going to succeed if pupils are not equipped to surf the crest of that wave?

With schools reducing the number of Nat5 subjects taken to 7 (or even 6) pupils have to make difficult choices. Unfortunately, in the early high school years, pupils sit for weeks on powerpoint or editting HTML and start to feel Computing is not only dull, but also not challenging or thought provoking.? Modern Studies, by contrast, stimulates them?considering by local and global issues like? terrorism, apartheid, social issues, the death penalty.? It's the most thought provoking subject my children have experienced - which is a good thing, in my book.? ?The stats Bill shows show very few boys taking foreign languages.? Scotland needs to keep more breadth in their secondary education for longer.?

This is a crime! Computer science should be as mandatory as maths and english in this day and age! We are failing our future generations!

"In Scotland the syllabus is boring and, in places, has little relevance to the modern jobs economy." - couldn't agree more, Bill. My son taught himself basic software development skills through CoderDojo and his own efforts because the Nat 5 syllabus didnt include anything relevant to the areas he is interested in.
