Long-Term Impact of Child Poverty in Spain and the Basque Country

Dear Readers,

This is the twenty-first installment of a newsletter series dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities related to children and adolescents in the Basque Country, Spain, and worldwide.

You can subscribe here to our digital newsletter, Basque Country Childhood Digital Newsletter, and also become part of our official community in Basque Country Childhood - Official Group.

As President of UNICEF Basque Country, it is an honor for me to lead this initiative, which represents a commitment to promoting children's rights and seeking collaboration with all public and private actors involved in the well-being of our children and adolescents.

Child poverty is one of the most persistent and complex challenges faced by many societies, with effects that extend far beyond childhood. Children growing up in poverty are at a high risk of experiencing health, educational, and personal development issues, and these effects can last a lifetime. In this edition, we will analyze the long-term consequences of child poverty and explore programs designed to break the cycle of poverty. We will also share some success stories and testimonials from those who have overcome this situation.

Long-Term Consequences of Child Poverty Child poverty has profound repercussions that deeply affect children, potentially limiting their well-being and life opportunities. These effects are not only evident during childhood but often extend into adolescence and adulthood, perpetuating an intergenerational cycle of poverty.

Effects on Physical and Mental Health Children in poverty often face health issues from a young age due to limited access to adequate nutrition, healthcare, and safe living conditions. Poverty is also associated with higher levels of stress and anxiety, as precarious environments often bring constant instability and uncertainty.

  • Malnutrition and Health Issues: Limited access to nutritious food can lead to malnutrition, anemia, and low weight, affecting children’s physical and cognitive development.
  • Mental Health: Poverty is a risk factor for mental health issues. Children in low-income households are more likely to experience problems such as depression and anxiety, which may continue to affect them later in life.

Impact on Academic Performance Poverty also directly affects children's academic performance. Families with fewer resources often struggle to access educational materials, extracurricular classes, or support services that could help children reach their potential. This not only impacts their school achievements but may also limit their options in higher education and the job market.

Programs to Break the Cycle of Poverty Fortunately, in both Spain and the Basque Country, programs are being implemented to break the cycle of child poverty and offer children and adolescents opportunities for a better future. These programs focus on improving access to education, ensuring access to adequate nutrition, and providing support to families to create more stable and secure environments.

  1. Child Guarantee Program The Child Guarantee Program aims to provide comprehensive support to children and families living in poverty. This program includes the provision of nutritious meals in schools, access to educational materials, and opportunities to participate in extracurricular and sports activities that promote social and emotional development. Impact: This program has proven effective in improving the academic performance and health of beneficiary children. In the Basque Country, the Child Guarantee Program has helped reduce educational inequalities and provide greater stability in children’s daily lives.
  2. Family Support Through Social Assistance Another key measure to break the cycle of poverty is to provide economic and social support to low-income families. This support may include housing subsidies, food assistance, and access to healthcare services. In the Basque Country, the Income Guarantee Benefit (RGI) has been essential in supporting families living in poverty and improving their living conditions. Strengthening Family Stability: Improving families' economic situations reduces household stress levels, positively impacting children’s development and well-being.

Impact of Programs on Beneficiaries’ Lives Support programs aimed at breaking the cycle of child poverty have significantly impacted beneficiaries’ lives. Here are some testimonials and success stories reflecting how these programs have changed the lives of children and their families.

  • Testimonial 1: Marta, mother and beneficiary of the Child Guarantee Program “Thanks to the Child Guarantee Program, my children have access to healthy meals at school, and I don’t have to worry as much about school supply expenses. This has been a great relief for us, and I’ve seen how they feel more motivated and confident in their studies.”
  • Testimonial 2: I?aki, a young man who overcame child poverty thanks to educational support programs “I grew up in a family with economic difficulties, but thanks to educational support programs, I was able to continue my studies and develop my skills. Today, I have a good job and a stable life. These programs really can make a difference in young people’s lives.”

Conclusions Child poverty is a problem that requires a comprehensive approach to ensure that all children have access to opportunities for full development. Although the effects of poverty can be profound and long-lasting, social support programs and public policies are helping to mitigate these consequences and provide alternatives to break the cycle of poverty. Strengthening these initiatives is crucial to reducing inequalities and providing a more equitable future for younger generations.

At UNICEF Basque Country, we will continue supporting policies and programs that effectively address child poverty, ensuring that every child has access to the resources and opportunities they need for full development and a fulfilling life.
