The long-term effects of spinal cord injuries

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a traumatic injury to the spinal cord that results in the loss of function below the level of the injury. The severity of an SCI can range from mild to complete paralysis, and the long-term effects can be significant.

Some of the most common long-term effects of an SCI include

  • Paralysis. The most apparent and debilitating effect of an SCI is paralysis. Paralysis can affect any or all of the limbs, and it can also affect the ability to breathe, move the bowels, and control the bladder.
  • Chronic pain. Many people with SCI experience chronic pain. Several factors, including nerve damage, muscle spasms, and pressure sores, can cause pain.
  • Urinary tract infections. People with SCI are at increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs). This is because they may have difficulty emptying their bladders, which can create a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Bowel problems. People with SCI may also have difficulty with bowel movements. They may have difficulty contracting their muscles to move stool through the intestines.
  • Pressure sores. Pressure sores are areas of skin that have been damaged by prolonged pressure. They are a severe complication of SCI, and they can lead to infection, sepsis, and even death.
  • Depression. The physical and emotional challenges of living with an SCI can lead to depression. Depression is a severe mental health condition that can make it difficult to cope with the challenges of living with an SCI.

Several treatments are available to help people with SCI manage the long-term effects of their injury. These treatments include

  • Physical therapy. Physical therapy can help people with SCI regain function and improve their mobility.
  • Occupational therapy. Occupational therapy can help people with SCI learn new skills and adapt to their new limitations.
  • Speech therapy. Speech therapy can help people with SCI who have difficulty speaking or swallowing.
  • Pain management. Several medications and other treatments are available to help people with SCI manage their pain.
  • Psychological counseling. Psychological counseling can help people with SCI cope with the emotional challenges of their injury.

If you or someone you know has sustained a spinal cord injury, there are some things you can do to get help.
