In healthcare, innovation must be integrated without upending existing processes that patients and staff rely on. Here's how you can strike the right balance:
- Engage stakeholders early. Gather input from patients, staff, and partners to understand the impact of changes.
- Pilot new ideas selectively. Test innovations on a small scale before wide implementation to minimize disruption.
- Monitor and adjust. Use data to assess the effectiveness of innovations and be ready to refine as needed.

This issue is frequent in Interventional Pain Medicine, where new procedures/devices come out each year for different indications. This is what I found to work best in the teams I've worked in: 1) Appoint a team member to lead the project, providing them with time, resources, and access to specialized training. Support them in developing a patient pathway for the new intervention; 2) Define clinical selection criteria for the intervention upfront, ensuring team-wide agreement for consistency; 3) Monitor patients closely during the first 24 months to quickly address any deviations from expected outcomes.

When adopting healthcare innovations, ensure the product is easy to implement and fits smoothly into your existing workflows. Review your processes and identify areas where new technology can be integrated with minimal disruption. Start by piloting with a small group of patients to refine the implementation. While setup may require time and patience, the long-term benefits often include improved efficiency and reduced workload. By adjusting workflows early, innovation won’t disrupt your practice—it’ll enhance it.
