Long live the Book
Hi friend
Welcome to the first edition of The Book Guild - my newsletter about all things books, writing, reading, and publishing.
If you're reading this, I'm assuming you are tangentially interested in books in general, and likely the publishing industry specifically. So, I'll make sure to keep you informed, entertained, and maybe even ... inspired ?! (*gasp*)
I want to hear from you - let me know about those burning questions you have about the industry, like: what is typesetting? do I need a literary agent? what's the difference between paperback and massmarket paperback? is there something wrong with me for rereading The Lord of the Rings?
You get the idea. Let's RAGE!
I'll end each newsletter with a book recommendation of something I recently read. So, here's today's Book Guild Recommends??:
Strout strengthens her position as a literary powerhouse in this almost-modernist glimpse into the life of a divorced couple. Their past, present and future all play out softly, with undefined edges and prose that feels close and intimate.
Oh William! tells the story of Lucy Barton and her ex-husband William (Lucy often thinks to herself, Oh William! when he does something silly, nice, profound or mundane) as they go on a modern-day quest of self-discovery.
Don't just take my word for it, though. Strout has won the Pulitzer Prize, and Oh William! was shortlisted for the Booker 2022. It was also listed as one of the best books of the year by 纽约时报 Book Review, The Washington Post , TIME and Vulture.
Happy reading!
