?? Long form videos are back and Miss AI has been crowned
Issue #314
It’s no surprise there’s been a spike in long-form on the world’s most dominant media platform hidden in plain sight. (That’s YouTube, in case you missed earlier editions.) It’s increasingly the sit-back platform of choice. Times are tough, streaming accounts are being trimmed but ad-funded YouTube will always be there to fall back on. Another reason why every creator brand should have a YouTube strategy. Happy Thursday, Simon.

A long form video surge
A common perception of video content creation is that it needs to be short and sweet with a punch to grab attention. Well, things could be changing. The number of 20-plus-minute videos posted on YouTube has risen from 1.3 million in 2022 to 8.5 million this year. No one is really sure why, but the trend for viewers to watch YouTube on a big screen digital TV (rather than handheld devices) could be a reason. Also, creators have noticed viewers asking for longer videos and deeper dives. This means video creators may need to think big in some respects - how will your content look on a bigger screen to viewers engaging with bigger ideas?
Google’s AI video tool launches
It’s only a beta version but Google Vids is an AI creation tool that generates images, videos and voice overs. Part of the Workspace suite of tools, users can create text, video and audio presentations from a few simple prompts. Hopefully this means the end of “death by PowerPoint”. No word yet on when these tools will be available to the wider creator base and if they’ll help in long form video creation.
Is AI getting kind of weird(er)?
The first Miss AI pageant has just been held. Yes, you read that correctly. Kenza Layli, a Moroccan lifestyle influencer with 200,000 followers on Instagram and 45,000 on TikTok, is the winner. Probably not as many as real life pageant contestants. Over 1,500 AI programmers and creators entered the contest. Judging was based on more than just looks (isn’t it always?) with use of AI tech and social reach also taken into consideration. And yes, contestants still had to answer questions on how to make the world a better place.

Cool tools
Turns out you don't need a film crew to pull off a multicam shoot anymore. Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 lets you connect up to four cameras - and yes, your iPhone counts. Sure, it won't replace the big rigs, but for scrappy creators looking to add some pro polish, it's a game-changer.
Hot Tips
We used to have a policy that our crews were no more than could fit in a van. I still think this is a good policy. But as budgets and scope increase so do crew sizes. It’s a perennial question.
