Is it lonely at the top?
This is one reason a potential client gave me last week for wanting to work with a coach.
She had recently got her first CEO position, and apart from other challenges, was finding it lonely at the top.
In her previous role, although she had been on the board, it had still been relatively operational as a role. She had a team and felt that she could still socialise with her team, but now she was feeling that it was necessary to maintain a little more of a distance.
How many of you feel the same way?
What many people find when they get the top job, is that not only do you feel the need to maintain a little more distance, but that actually, many of your people will expect that too.? Suddenly you find that people at work don’t quite respond to you in the same way as before…
Is it about trust?? Maybe… What are their expectations of you now and how do you deliver???
Or do you need to set the expectations and then deliver?
Things do change, but it doesn’t have to be lonely.
What you will find is that you still need good people around you who can challenge you, hold your feet to the fire, support you and help you grow.? Some of you may be able to find most of this support at work.? Hiring a good board of directors and creating the psychological safety needed for all of you to operate in this way is key. Not only for your success but for the success of everyone on the board and the organisation.
But some of what you need, you will need to find elsewhere.
Why?
Because we need people around us who understand our journey without having to be affected professionally by it.? We need people who can give us an external view without any strings attached.
Some of you may be thinking that you can find that with friends and family, but are there really no strings attached there?? They will no doubt want the best for you, but some of your decisions will affect them, so how impartial can they be?? And are you one of the lucky ones that has friends and family who understand the journey you are on?? Most of the time, we find that both our friends and family, although well intentioned, don't really understand our journey.
So find yourself a community of support, a network that you can learn from and grow, as well as give support back.?
And YES!
Get yourself a coach - someone who will have your best interests at heart, will be able to challenge and support you and even hold you accountable for the career and life you want to create.
