The loneliness of the long distance entrepreneur

The loneliness of the long distance entrepreneur

Loneliness is epidemic in the US. It is the real campus scourge. It is a serious public health problem. It contributes to the "diseases of despair" that is killing Americans at a record rate. It is also a problem for the increasing numbers of the over-55 divorced.

Here's how one company is attacking the problem.

And, to many entrepreneurs, loneliness is no stranger and is part and parcel of some entrepreneurial psychopathologies like anxiety and depression. So, if you feel isolated, removed and alone, what should you do?

  1. Separate solitude from loneliness. The former can be constructive and creative. The latter can be deadly.
  2. Resist the temptation to bowl alone. Spend time with people, particularly others who are feeling like you.
  3. Spend more time in nature.
  4. Exercise regularly, drink less and eat right
  5. Volunteer for something that gives you a sense of purpose. If your business can't live without you being there for an hour or two a month, then something is wrong.
  6. Refuse to let others define your happiness. Happy people are successful people, not vice versa.
  7. Learn how to meetup at a Meetup
  8. Learn how to talk to a narcissistic entrepreneur so it doesn't make you feel even more lonely. Here is why they are talking on their cell phones so you can hear everything they are saying.
  9. Go fly fishing. For an even bigger self reliant bang for the buck, tie your own mop flies.

10. Write something. Here are 500 words on how to write 500 words a day.

11. Don't use social media as a substitute for face to face interaction.

12. Forgive yourself and let go of the mistakes you've made that are preventing you from connecting.

Entrepreneurship is a tag team, long distance relay race. Don't be lonely at the finish line. It's time to rejoin the lost tribe of medicine.

Having been an entrepreneur for most of my life I would like to add reading to the list. It does not matter what you read but it is one of the best ways to unwind. Also one of the most cost effective options out there..??

We should start a support group on facebook for lonly entrepreneurs /solopreneurs. We can spend time with each other. Lonely at the top is true to some degree but these days we have internet. It is not hard to be connected. None should be alone in this world.

One of the biggest reasons why many entrepreneurs end up feeling so isolated and alone is they are typically bootstrapping early on and on a very limited budget, meanwhile all their friends are out doing things that cost money early stage entrepreneurs just don't have. No one wants to just play board games at home anymore, and this creates a huge hurdle. You talk about fly fishing - another great example of how ignorance creeps into our advice to entrepreneurs - who has the money to go fly fishing? Unless you are one of the very very few people who lives near a suitable river, this costs hundreds to thousands of dollars and that is not in our budget. Perhaps instead of advice for what these already stressed and overwhelmed entrepreneurs need to do, we need more advice on what friends and family members of entrepreneurs can do to support us.
