The Lone Star State and The Dominican Republic produce an unforgettable week on the PGA Tour
This week was one of the most action-packed weeks golf has seen this year. The WGC Match Play is one of the most exciting tournaments to watch each year as the players get a break from traditional stroke play to go head-to-head against the competition. However, on top of the match play event this week the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship was taking place in the Dominican Republic.
Since the World Golf Championship this week was in a match play format golf fans got an extra day of competition to watch as the event started on Wednesday. The early group stage matches featured some wild upsets in the first few rounds of play. Ian Poulter would dominate in his first match against Rory Mcilroy winning 6&5 to start the tournament. Some other notable upsets that came early on in the tournament would include Matt Kuchar winning 3&2 over Justin Thomas as well as Dylan Fritelli winning 6&5 over Tony Finau. However, the biggest upset of the group stage matches would come from Bryson Dechambeau. Bryson failed to win his first group play match as he lost 2 down to Antoine Rozner who was making his PGA Tour debut this week.
Group play would come to a close on Friday as the event would move into round 16 to begin the knockout format for the weekend play. However, before the sun would set on Friday, I would take eight different playoffs to determine the winner for their respective groups which was once again a bonus this week as it provided the fans more golf to watch. Over in the Dominican Republic, Joel Dahmen was having himself a week as he was sitting at -10 par going into the final round in search of his first PGA Tour victory.
The weekend would provide more stellar golf as the upsets continued to pour on. The most notable being Scottie Scheffler who would take down two players that hadn’t been beaten all week in Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar. Meanwhile, Billy Horcschel was making some noise of his own beating Kevin Streelman 2&1 then beating Tommy Fleetwood in eating holes to earn himself a spot in the championship against Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler would take an early lead in the championship match, but he would be unable to hang on as Horschel would take the lead on hole 5 and would never look back as he went on to win the championship with a 2-up victory. At the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship, it would come down to the final hole as Dahmen had a one-shot lead over Rafael Campos. Dahmen would make par leaving Campous a putt to send it to a playoff, he would miss the birdie putt and Dahmen would capture his first victory on the PGA Tour.
