New openings

A new opening from former Pachamama chef Adam Rawson, Isla sits on the ground floor of brand-new hotel The Standard, London. Taking its name and inspiration from Britain’s island geography, the restaurant offers a menu of small plates from the sea, soil and land. Tuck into Iberico pork with chimichurri, potatoes with smoked garlic miso and salmon with beets and horseradish while admiring the intriguing interiors made up of fluffy walls, contrasting patterns and indoor foliage. Rawson’s second venue within the hotel, late-night bar Double Standard, can also be found on the ground floor while ten storeys up two-Michelin-starred chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias is about to open new rooftop restaurant Decimo. Accessed directly via a bright red external lift, the restaurant will serve Spanish and Mexican cuisine alongside panoramic city views. Due to open on 10th October, it will be ready to welcome guests during World Travel Market London 2019.
Earlier in the year, royal favourite The Goring Hotel opened Siren by Nathan Outlaw – the hotel’s first new restaurant since 1910. Created as a more casual alternative to the Michelin-starred Goring Dining Room, which remains open alongside this new addition, the restaurant sees Nathan Outlaw put the spotlight on seafood in an elegant Russell Sage-designed dining room that overlooks the hotel’s private garden. Famed for his two-Michelin-starred eatery in Cornwall, Outlaw offers classic yet inventive dishes made using the freshest ingredients that his hometown has to offer.
Kerridge's Bar & Grill is the first London restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Tom Kerridge
Renowned for his acclaimed Frog restaurants in Hoxton and Covent Garden, award-winning chef Adam Handling took on his biggest project to date this year as chef patron for the swanky new Belmond Cadogan hotel. Overseeing all the food and drink options within the hotel, Handling launched elegant restaurant Adam Handling Chelsea and sophisticated lounge Cadogan’s by Adam Handling. The former serves London-inspired dishes made using ingredients sourced from across the British Isles while the latter offers his take on afternoon tea with a menu that focuses on nostalgia.
Having made his name at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow – the first pub to be awarded two Michelin stars – Tom Kerridge is another chef putting his culinary stamp on a London hotel. Taking over a striking ground floor space within the Corinthia Hotel, Kerridge’s Bar & Grill is the first London restaurant from the Michelin-starred chef and sees him bring his celebrated comfort food to a five-star establishment. David Collins Studio have transformed the once light, beige dining room into a seductive setting of bottle green walls, shiny burgundy banquettes and low hanging lights, all offset by eclectic artworks and an attention-grabbing sculpture courtesy of Kerridge’s wife, Beth Cullen Kerridge.

A more low-key new opening, The Buxton is a pub with rooms on trendy Brick Lane. From the people behind The Culpeper – a fantastic east London boozer that’s home to one of the city’s best hidden rooftops – The Buxton serves simple and seasonal cuisine among original Victorian features and pared-back interiors. Handsome dark wood and burgundy marble sit next to upcycled furnishings and industrial elements to create a hip yet sophisticated aesthetic while the carefully-crafted food menu changes regularly to adapt to whatever locally-sourced produce is available – expect meat from Swaledale in Yorkshire and fresh fish caught daily on the South Coast. Like its sister venue, The Buxton features a small rooftop but it’s reserved for hotel guests only.
Casual yet sophisticated
Nobu Restaurant and Bar crosses the boundary between tony hangout and fine dining establishment
Crossing the boundary between tony hangout and fine dining establishment, Nobu Restaurant and Bar sits within Nobu Hotel Shoreditch – the brand’s first European property. The opening is one of more than 30 Nobu restaurants across five continents and joins the longstanding Nobu at Como Metropolitan, which became the first European venture from lauded Japanese sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa when it landed in London back in 1997. Following the success of the Mayfair original, Cecconi’s is another restaurant to boast outlets across the world and further London branches can be found within Soho House properties The Ned and Redchurch Townhouse. The classic Italian restaurant serves handmade pasta, cicchetti and fresh seafood against a smart trattoria-inspired backdrop.

Nearby, Red Rooster can be found within hip new hotel and members’ club The Curtain. The restaurant is the second branch of Marcus Samuelsson’s famous Harlem original, which counts Paul McCartney and the Obamas as fans, and serves Harlem staples like the Obama short ribs and jerk catfish alongside a number of dishes created especially for this new outpost. With a colourful, mismatched decor, a stage where live bands play six nights a week, and whole fried chicken served with indoor fireworks, it’s a playful spot that’s a world away from your typical hotel restaurant.
Berners Tavern boasts a spectacularly beautiful dining room with 185 photographs and an ornate stucco ceiling
In central London, Berners Tavern has come to be one of the most recognisable restaurants in London thanks to its spectacularly beautiful dining room. The walls are adorned with 185 beautifully framed and lit photographs while an ornate stucco ceiling, golden backlit bar and twinkling chandeliers complete the lavish design. Found within Ian Schrager’s trendy Edition hotel, the restaurant is part of Jason Atherton’s growing empire and sticks to his formula of elevating seemingly simple dishes to magnificent new heights – feast on braised beef mac and cheese for main and gin and tonic flaming Alaska for dessert. September 2019 will also see Atherton expand his extensive restaurant portfolio with the opening of The Betterment within lavish new hotel The Biltmore.

Another establishment with a strong focus on design, Neptune is one of several photogenic bars and restaurants located within Kimpton Fitzroy London. Run by the duo behind Hackney gastropub the Richmond, the dazzling restaurant oozes style with a graphic wooden floor, a peach ceiling and walls, hanging pot plants, and curtained chandeliers. As its name would suggest, the restaurant puts the focus on seafood and its centrepiece is a huge 30-seat bar designed as a modern interpretation of a classic oyster bar. While you’re at the hotel, be sure to pay a visit to the equally lavish Fitz’s for a cocktail or two.
Fine dining
Anne-Sophie Pic was awarded her first Michelin star on British soil with the opening of La Dame de Pic
The second most decorated London chef of all time, topped only by Jo?l Robuchon, Alain Ducasse is the one chef to have held three Michelin stars in three different cities, and his London restaurant, Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester, is one of only three restaurants in the capital with three Michelin stars, along with Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and The Araki. Open since 2007, the Park Lane establishment has remained at the forefront of London’s dining scene for more than ten years and has held onto its three stars for the past nine years.
With a total of six Michelin stars, Heston Blumenthal also sits in the top ten of the world’s most decorated chefs and Dinner, his two-Michelin-starred restaurant within the Mandarin Oriental, continues to astound. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass walls provide diners with impressive views of Hyde Park and a glimpse into the kitchen but the attention-grabbing food remains the star of the show. Blumenthal has made his name with experimental food pairing and Dinner is no different, offering a very modern take on historic British cooking.
Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester is one of only three restaurants in the capital with three Michelin stars
Sitting just behind Heston on the fine dining league table, Anne-Sophie Pic is the fourth female chef to ever earn three Michelin stars. In 2017, Pic was awarded her first Michelin star on British soil with the opening of La Dame de Pic at the new Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square. One of two fine dining options in the hotel, the restaurant places Parisian design elements in a classically English space with warm chocolate brown seating, tinted mirrored pillars and a number of intimate alcoves. The refined menu celebrates Pic’s signature dishes with the sake-marinated Challans chicken and the artful mille-feuille two of the headline acts.
Another female chef rising to the top of a male-dominated industry is Hélène Darroze. Having trained under Alain Ducasse at Louis XV in Monaco back in 1990, Darroze followed in his footsteps and opened a restaurant within a London hotel a year after he took over at The Dorchester. A success from the offset, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught won a Michelin star within one year of opening and then gained a second in 2011. Renowned for its continuously inventive menu and beautifully historic dining room, the restaurant is due to reopen in mid-September following a major two-month refurbishment. Diners can expect a brand-new design courtesy of acclaimed French design house Pierre Yovanovitch Architecture d’Intérieu along with a Chef’s Table and a dedicated Armagnac Room.
