1) RECENT LONDON PUB CLOSURES OR CURRENTLY UNDER THREAT

• The Compton Arms?is facing a license review. There has been a pub here since the mid-16th century. It is under threat after?complaints to the council that it was a nuisance. For literary pub lovers: It is one of the places that inspired George Orwell’s essay:?The Moon Under Water.?Also, former Compton Arm’s publican, Malcolm Mant, released a book in 2019 about his life ‘behind bars’ called?30 Years Behind Bars: My Life and Times Running the British Pub.
• A couple fight to save the St Brides Tavern from being bulldozed - they've worked and lived for 17 years.
• Two months ago, I posted the petition to save The Junction, SE5’s jazz joint. The Junction is now closed.
• The Pigeon closed in August 2022, Anspach & Hobday stated it was due to the venue no longer being economically viable.
• The White Swan in Charlton is sadly missed.

2) LONDON PUBS LOST SINCE 2000

MyLondon (5 Mar 2022) reported: Pubs have been lost in London boroughs since 2000, using CAMRA data. The list is arranged by the percentage of boozers lost. Some boroughs, such as Westminster, have had a lot of pubs closures but they had a much higher number to begin with.

• The Guardian (23 Aug 22) predicted: More than 70% of pubs do not expect to survive winter as energy costs soar. Independent brewers and pub operators warn of ‘doomsday scenario’ unless government takes urgent action
