London Mayor hints at London F1 race

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has dropped a big hint that the capital could be in the running to host a Formula One race

He told Sky Sports he was “sure” that F1 could host a race in London, saying: “Watch this space.”

Khan was speaking before the F1 live event in London, which saw thousands of fans flock to London to watch the sport’s cars driving on the street beside Trafalgar Square.

He said: “There are some hurdles we’ll have to overcome. I’ve met the new leadership of F1, they’re a breath of fresh air, they’re very exciting, they’ve got cracking ideas, and if they want to have a conversation with me, I’m really happy to talk, listen, and work with them to make it happen.

“We’re good at organising events safely. I’m reassured we can make everyone safe in London and we’re going to make sure events are successful. I’m sure F1, working with us, can in the future have an F1 race in London. Watch this space.”

The British Grand Prix is currently held at Silverstone, but its owners announced on Tuesday that it had activated its break clause and would stop running the event from 2019, saying rising costs were making it too expensive to host.

While it is believed the circuit wants to renegotiate a better deal, this opens the door to London, which has proved it can hold an event and draw in big crowds even at short notice.
