London Calling: My journey to becoming a Marketing Manager
Mike Garrett
Helping IFAs attract clients seamlessly online without wasting time and money on stale leads.
Anyone who's followed me for a while is likely to have noticed that I moved jobs recently. Well, slight understatement... I've switched careers completely. So I wanted to introduce myself to my new connections and to those less familiar with my story.
Over the past 7 years, I've worked as a Recruitment Consultant specialising in the Wealth Management market. This was my first 'proper job,’ although I had worked in the hospitality sector since the age of 15.
I moved once during that time, 2 years ago, when I followed my former Operations Manager when he set up his own recruitment agency. Working for a start-up was a real eye-opener; there are always more hats than heads, and everyone was required to chip in outside their normal comfort zone. This was how I discovered a passion for marketing.
Sadly, I was made redundant in December 2022. By this point, it would've been easy to carry on the recruitment journey. But, if I've learned anything from my 7 years in recruitment, it's to not rush blindly into an opportunity just because it's easy or feels comfortable.
I took the decision to pursue my newfound passion for marketing. All it took was a LinkedIn update to break the news and a generous amount of help from my online network before the message managed to find its way to Malcolm Costello at Four Seasons Recruitment.

After a couple of discussions and a face-to-face meeting in London, I am really excited to have joined the business as Marketing Manager. Over the coming months, I will be working closely with Malcolm to devise and execute a marketing strategy to help propel FSRL even further ahead as the recruitment leader in luxury fashion and retail.
It's been nearly 15 years since I worked in London. Back then I was a fresh-faced teenager doing a stint of work experience at Universal Music on Kensington High Street. The world has changed somewhat since then! Indeed, the past few years have felt like a whole decade and a half on their own - but let's agree not to go back there, shall we?!
I will be working predominantly from home in Bristol but will swap the Avon for the Thames monthly, allowing me to spend time with colleagues and work on some exciting projects on-site.
If you are a fashion or retail professional, please reach out and connect. I'm looking forward to learning more and more about the profession as I find my feet, as well as following and championing your individual journeys.
I will shortly start publishing a newsletter to keep you all up to date with the goings-on at FSRL. I’m also looking at the potential for a Podcast, providing insights and interviews with hiring managers and professionals within retail and fashion. If this is an area in which you would like to get involved, please email me at [email protected] or send me a message through LinkedIn.
