Just Eat Takeaway to be acquired by Delivery Hero owner

The Delivery Hero owner Prosus is planning to acquire Just Eat Takeaway, the parent company of Lieferando, for 4.1 billion euros. This acquisition marks another important step in the industry consolidation that has been ongoing for years and would create one of the four largest food delivery groups in the world - alongside Chinese Meituan, DoorDash, and Uber Eats. Despite declining orders and a deficit of 1.6 billion euros in 2024 at Just Eat Takeaway, Prosus is convinced of the strategic importance of the deal and has made a purchase offer, which sent Just Eat Takeaway's stock soaring by more than 50 percent.

REWE plans to restructure Flink's leadership

After Rewe among others invested 150 million in Flink last September, the supermarket group now appears to be preparing for a potential takeover of the delivery service through a leadership change. According to Gründerszene, Flink CEO Oliver Merkel must vacate his position at the end of March and will be replaced by co-founder Julian Dames, who is said to be more open to a potential takeover by main investor Rewe. In an email to investors, Merkel indirectly blames Rewe for his dismissal and accuses the supervisory board of putting the interests of major shareholders above those of Flink. The supervisory board is also affected by the restructuring and is to be reduced from nine to five members.

Amazon now delivers packages overnight

Amazon is apparently testing a new Overnight Express Service, with deliveries between 3 and 7 AM - free for Prime members on orders of €20 or more. Since nobody wants to be rung out of bed at this hour, Amazon must solve the challenge of non-disruptive delivery, which will likely be easiest for houses with secure drop-off locations or accessible mailboxes. While night deliveries have previously only been offered by specialist providers at high prices, Amazon could once again set new standards in e-commerce with this service.

Consumer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) Models: Is Temu Changing B2C Digital Commerce?

Temu's explosive growth since 2022 signals a shift in digital commerce, with 33 million users in Germany and 75 million across the EU by April 2024. We’ve all heard stories at this point of whole Cargo-Fleets almost or actually being booked out by Temu and similar players alone. The platform's success is built on two revolutionary aspects of its Consumer-to-Manufacturer (C2M) model:

  • Data-Driven Production ("Reverse Manufacturing"): Using advanced analytics and social listening tools, Temu analyzes consumer preferences to guide production decisions, ensuring products match market demand.
  • Direct Supply Chain Innovation: By connecting manufacturers directly with consumers and eliminating middlemen, Temu offers significantly lower prices while accepting longer delivery times.

However, these longer delivery times will soon be history, as Temu has recently started using local warehouses in Europe, planning to fulfill 80 percent of all European orders from these local facilities. Under their fully managed model, manufacturers send merchandise to designated third-party warehouses in the country of origin once customer orders are received. Additionally, qualified European merchants are enabled to handle their own logistics fulfillment.

Temu seeking for reliable third-party logistics (3PL) providers to support its expanding EU operations presents a valuable business opportunity for 3PLs. But make no mistake: to succeed in such a partnership, 3PLs must be able to match the rapid pace and high-volume demands of Temu and alike. Leveraging modern, easily integrable, and scalable software solutions is essentially a must. There’s simply no way serving customers like that “the old way”.
