Saturday morning mumblings from Mike?

As the world struggles to bring thoughts together to form directions, consensus and positive action how do we all corporately and personally make sense of the new world and strive to grow and understand each other using common language & communication? Words after all mean something shouldn't they?

I see challenges on a daily basis as we all do if we are being honest.

Challenges in understanding due to many factors but do we have the skills to communicate these questions back to the other individual with purpose, clarity and positive action as our intention? I don't know.

What are our differences and why is it so damn hard to communicate?

  • Different languages & norms.
  • Different requirements across the game board of work and life.
  • Different people bringing different experiences and history to the table.
  • Different corporate goals - customers and service/product providers.

Ways to drive thought and ideation forward for clarity, purpose and a positive, meaningful direction forward?

How do we become successful at this and communication in general? I have certainly struggled with this in the past, here is what I know:

  • Focus on the process - how and why is communication flawed. Ability to use proper language, level of knowledge, understanding of mindset. Build the ability to #qualify and #quantify your own thought process and bring this to the communication table with easy to understand words. Sounds simple doesn't it, you would be surprised. #process
  • Concentrate on cross-corporate teamwork & partnerships. In working with international teams, ensure communication is clear and concise. I like to be as simple as possible when I communicate internationally and if there are questions I have even resorted to utilising Google Translate to communicate with clarity and focus on the points at hand. Working within team settings at work and in sports I have seen that #leadership is critical in driving #teamwork and #togetherness forward.
  • Make introspective improvement a part of your daily routine. For me this is a daily occurrence which is always at the forefront of my process. As communication comes from the individual, how can and do we think, do we need to change our active process and methods to achieve positive outcomes and communication goals? A layer of thought added to the normal words that come out of your mouth? The inner voice before the words are spoken I like to call it. #introspection
  • Communication is critical in today's world. Honest communication is even more critical. Whether speaking with clients or partners or friends, we really need to start to pay attention to our #communication and slow down, rethink and try harder to understand.

Make these ideas a part of every interaction. Bring the goal of understanding to the table. Do not communicate with yourself in mind, communicate firstly with the understanding of others being your first goal. #listeningfirst

Whether their "vision" is correct or not, develop a plan to firstly communicate with clarity of understanding and then move your process forward with understanding as your key goal.

A slight pivot or shift away from your normal process of talking but not listening.

The results whether corporate or personal will bring big gains to #theprocess

After all, isn't everyone's goal the same in the end?

The guideline 'keeping communications as simple as possible' is misleading. I think this encourages messengers to be brief, and to keep the message short, when this is not the intended reasoning behind that phrase. As a takeaway, I keep your 'Do not communicate with yourself in mind, communicate firstly with the understanding of others being your first goal'. This mindset is rather complex than simple, because it involves thinking in a way your brain is not custom to do so anymore. Communication takes skills and talent, and that's something that not comes handy to everybody, as well as every other trade.
