Logistics Briefing Weekly

Mexico

  • Trump suspends 25% tariffs on Mexico for one month after agreement with Sheinbaum. The United States and Mexico agree to reinforce the border with 10,000 members of the National Guard. The agreement seeks to curb drug trafficking, especially of fentanyl, into US territory.

Chile

  • Maersk (MSK): maintains booking restrictions for traffic with transshipment via PAMIT. It does not accept bookings with destination or transit in this port and is not accepting reefer business either.
  • CMA CGM: due to the suspension of COSCO's service from Lirquén, it is not quoting cargo from the Southern Zone of Chile. In addition, it is not accepting new business to the US and Canada due to heavy congestion.
  • Yang Ming + Hyundai: have suspended their service to Oceania due to congestion in transshipment ports.
  • Wan Hai: restriction on dry cargo for transshipment traffic due to congestion in connecting ports. They are only offering WSA service from CLVAP with prior approval from head office.
  • Hapag-Lloyd (HPL): low stock of reefer units, subject to availability. It also maintains booking restrictions for traffic with transhipment via PAMIT.
  • MSC: allocation must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis before requesting bookings. Applies to all businesses and lanes.
  • ONE: rates available only under ONE QUOTE mode.

Peru

  • The fall in international prices of some commodities has generated an unusual increase in the import of general cargo, including hydrocarbons, metals, fertilizers, chemicals, wheat, corn and barley. This has led to an increase in the arrival of ships and longer waiting times, generating congestion in the port of Callao.

Colombia

  • Cosco Shipping expands its network and connects Buenaventura on its new Shanghai - Chancay route. The Colombian port will see a growth of 10% to 15% in operations and 10,000 TEU per week, strengthening the maritime connection between Asia and the Pacific coast of Latin America.

Global

  • Restructuring of alliances and intensification of competition. The shipping sector is undergoing a strategic reorganization with the consolidation of new alliances and the redefinition of the market:

  • Gemini Cooperation: Maersk Line and Hapag-Lloyd launched this alliance on February 1, 2025.
  • OCEAN Alliance: Formed by COSCO Shipping, CMA CGM and Evergreen Marine, with operations secured until 2032.
  • Premier Alliance: Evolution of THE Alliance, which brings together ONE, HMM and Yang Ming Marine Transport.

In contrast, MSC, the largest shipping company in terms of TEU capacity, will continue to operate independently in 2025, without joining any alliance, although it will sign specific slot-sharing agreements.

Intense competition in the sector will be reflected in the six main global shipping routes. In five of them, OCEAN Alliance leads in number of services, with Gemini and MSC dominating the transatlantic route.
