Port congestion in China and India

We advise you to review your shipments and planning in the first week of September and contact your advisor to anticipate delays in the supply chain.

CHINA

• Due to port congestion, several vessels have affected their itineraries and have not been able to return to China on schedule, resulting in delays and roll overs.
• Some carriers have already sold all their available space for the first week of September and indicate that it is very likely that some shipments that were previously confirmed will roll over.
• CMA CGM cancelled by mistake some active shipments that are in TS in Busan and it is estimated that it will take 1-2 weeks to solve this problem.
• Carriers are avoiding shipping heavy cargo volume, so these requests are taking longer than normal, and have been subject to roll over by carriers.

INDIA

• There have been strong winds that have halted vessel movements and much of the operation in Mundra. There are several shipments awaiting customs clearance at the terminal while authorities monitor the situation to restore the port to normal service.

COLOMBIA

• The associations of land cargo transportation, Fedetranscarga, Colfecarga, Asecarga, ACC reported that a large peaceful mobilization is scheduled for tomorrow in the major cities of the country because of the increase in fuel. Take into account cargo planning that may have delays or increase in costs during these days, due to warehousing, delays, non-compliance in loading and unloading times and delivery of empty containers.

Container manufacturers tell customers they are ‘sold out’ until mid-October

Drewry says it expects 2024 to be the second-highest year on record for dry freight container production, with manufacturers reporting full orderbooks.

Ocean carriers and container leasing companies have booked every available production slot until mid-October at Chinese manufacturers after second-quarter deliveries hit an all-time high and July output of dry freight and reefer containers exceeded 850,000 teu.

Shippers urged to plan for peak as air cargo could overheat

Shippers have been urged to secure space and make contingency plans as the air cargo market is facing capacity shortages out of key Asian markets during the peak season, according to speakers on a webinar from Xeneta and Tiaca.

Speaking on the webinar, Xeneta airfreight analyst Wenwen Zhang pointed to statistics showing that dynamic load factors – factoring in weight and volume – from Asia Pacific to Europe were at 86% and to North America were at around 88% in July – in what is supposed to be a quieter point of the year.

The capacity situation is expected to get tighter during the peak due to the usual rise in general cargo volumes, the ongoing surge in e-commerce and the continuing disruption to ocean shipping.

Arrival of new box ships and fewer blank sailings should ease port congestion

Port congestion should ease as new vessel capacity comes in and Red Sea diversions become the norm – but “there will always be something” disrupting the market, warned Drewry’s Ports & Terminal Insight editor, Eleanor Hadland.?

In Drewry’s monthly report, the maritime consultancy identified a sharp increase in congestion as a result of the Red Sea diversions, and Ms Hadland noted:?“A lot of the congestion has been related to transhipment cargo.?

“If I was a shipper, I’d be looking for a direct service – I would not be wanting a service that relied on transhipment,” she added.?
