LOGGING-ON: SEPTEMBER 2016 - ISSUE 2

Logging-on attended Demo International 2016 close to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. The main articles in this issue highlight some of the interesting new products that were released at the event. The transport logistics of the organisers to get people to the site and back left a little to be desired. However, once there it was forgotten as the various companies and organisations that displayed their products and services made the experience worthwhile. There was a good balance of large and small manufacturers, and the level of technical skill at the various stands was impressive. It is always great to attend events where manufacturers can put their equipment to work under realistic circumstances, and where manufactures can engage with people who are there to do more than just kick tyres (or tracks). The level of technological development since Demo 2012 is remarkable. Much of this focus surrounds equipment’s ability to work on increasingly difficult terrain. Some of the sites were dedicated to cable assist logging which was new to many of the visitors attending.

In this issue, we examine the new 632E grapple skidder from Tigercat, which is specifically designed to handle harsh terrain. Waratah has produced a new fixed-head processor, the HTH 624CW, which besides processing can also load trucks, stack logs and even offload trailers. Ponsse impressed with a new harvester head for use in larger trees and difficult conditions. The H8HD requires a large Ponsse wheeled carrier or a suitably sized excavator. John Deere released new swing machine models. The 3154/3156G and 3754/3756G forestry excavators will be used in applications ranging from loading to processing big wood. Finally, we really head to the hills as we examine the new technologically advanced Log Champ 360 trackedswing yarder from T-MAR.
