Recently I have the opportunity to come across co-living. Even though it is not something new, co-living concept is not a norm for Singaporeans like me. So, here I am to share with you on co-living in Singapore! Congratulations for landing in that dream career opportunity of yours in the far, far east! And the best part of it? Getting to live in this bustling metropolis called Singapore where sun, food and multi-cultural exposure have always been a constant. Now, before you pack and go, take some time to explore your lodging options. Being a Generation X Asian living and working in Singapore all my life, the government housing policies and measures (coupled with the compulsory social savings for mortgage financing known as the Central Provident Fund scheme) have immensely encouraged me to opt for public or private home ownership over rental housing regardless of my marital status. However, if you are an aspiring globe-trotting millennial, home ownership in Singapore is definitely not an option when you are more at ease with freedom than commitment. While living standards are pretty manageable for singles, lodging rental does not come too cheap.
1.Co-sharing with friends
If you have friends who are already living in Singapore, you may co-share an apartment with them. This will save you a lot of problems finding a lodging in another part of the world. But sometimes, living with friends may also be a nightmare. While you get to enjoy moments like the good old days, you may start seeing the different living habits that you may not be receptive towards. So, either you accommodate and accept or discuss your concerns with your friends and risk spoiling that friendship.
2.Renting and Living In Public Housing
You get to experience the real Singapore where the actions are – think wet markets, chaotic coffee shops, school bells ringing off. Towns are self-sufficient with easy accessibility to food, transport and shopping. If you want to be a heart-lander, you may consider renting and living in public housing. However, do take note that the process is usually time-consuming and stressful as you require the help of property agents for “house-shopping” most of the time and you may need to purchase some furniture as the unit / room may be totally unfurnished or partially furnished. On top of that, such rental lease will require you to commit at least six months as part of the government measures. Cleaning service of the unit or room is not included in the rental fees. Landlord and housemates? Well, it depends on your luck.

3.Renting and Living in Private Housing
If you would like to have amenities such a gym, swimming pool etc within your estate and feel somewhat more exclusive, then private housing is for you. The downside is that the rental fees are higher than that of public housing. In the past, unless lodging is included as part of your expatriate package, the other options are to either stay in serviced apartments or to engage property agents for house-hunting.
With co-living operators budding in town, co-living is the best option for you to experience Singapore in well-located home where you do not need to pay a beyond-reach rental fee. Here comes the new era where you get to choose the location and tastefully furnished room you would like to stay in (what you see is what you get) and make the necessary payment that includes the utilities usage and cleaning servicesnbsp;to commit (minimum three months for most co-living operators) before you pack and board the flight! By paying co-living operator an affordable fee monthly, you do not have to deal with the stress finding a room in a unit where you do not know what kind of housemates you are staying with.
On top of that, co-living operators offer a variety of get-together activities to mingle and bond with the like-minded millennials who are also living in your community. You get to work in the day, choose to participate and mingle in activities, and be part of a closely bonded community where your personal space is respected. At the end of the day, you retreat to your personal space where you can wind down and be at peace with yourself. The fact is, whichever lodging option you choose, you should not jeopardize your exciting journey ahead with lodging issues.
