Project Brief:

As the winning bid for tender, we were responsible for the undertaking of a project for Caddick Construction which took place in July 2020.?The project brief was to carry out the retaining works, supporting a section of road adjacent to a proposed roundabout, to form part of the project’s public highway infrastructure.??

Budget Constraints:

Faced with Budget costs that conflicted with the Engineering Requirements for Retaining walls due to proximity to a culvert, resulting in poor ground conditions.?The client required alternative systems which could meet both engineering and commercial constraints. Due to the complexity of this project in relation to engineering requirements and site topography, the client needed a retaining wall that was high in specification and met with tight budgets and strict time scales.

Wall type:

The chosen wall type was Gillcon’s own BBA/HAPAS approved system Lock + Load. A high strength, lightweight concrete fascia retaining wall system that offers the benefit of quarried stone effect through manufactured precast process. ?The modular design uses reinforced concrete components assembled into a rigid cantilever unit. This unique design results in a system that can easily be installed by hand keeping the construction costs to a minimum.

Project constraints:

Access to the work face alongside an existing culvert, presented its own commercial and construction issues. These issues were overcome with careful planning from our management team and exceptional operational support displayed by our site operatives.

Savings to Client:

Savings were offered to client through the efficiency of Gillcon’s Lock + Load System, offering a construction build rate at 40m2 finished wall per day based on a Three man team.?With the advantages of being able to reuse site won materials, we offered the client further savings on additional imported material. This can considerably reduce the carbon footprint and, return savings in areas of the build process which other systems cannot offer.

?Construction & Environmental considerations:

• Wall systems next to tree protection zones had to be considered and carefully planned.
• Sealed wall system reduces habitation by vermin and offers anti climb protection.
• With the advantages of being able to reuse site won materials, Gillcon can considerably reduce the carbon footprint, traffic congestion to site; noise pollution and negative effects on local population in nearby built up areas.
